Just last night, I was explaining to my daughter born in 1998 about how Jim Rome owned the late evening broadcast on ESPN in 1998.

This conversation came up after she heard about the Jim/Chris Everett incident.

Rome didn't follow his own advice.

Have a take. Don't suck.

ESPN: when are you gonna figure out people don't consume your product because of black women reporters?

ESPN hangs on to reporters too long. They need the younger, hotter, funnier version of both men and women.

How's Chris Berman or Rachel Nichols even still have a job?

"I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world she covers football, she covers basketball," Nichols said in July 2020. "If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away."
What is scandalous about this? She was supposed to cover the playoffs but was replaced by a black woman to make ESPN look better. Is she not supposed to acknowledge the obvious pandering? And she didn't intend for this conversation to go beyond her and the other person. Other employees at ESPN didn't like hearing the truth so they made a fuss. Pathetic.

Looks like Nichols found out that white woman is lower than black woman on the diversity totem pole. Taylor better hope they don't find a trans Muslim to take her place.

Nichols was just fine with the diversity hires until it affected her. I hope she gets fired, because this is what she asked for.

And BTW, she's married to Diane Sawyer's stepson. She's benefited from not only diversity, but also nepotism.

She can cry all she wants. Sucks to suck.

I don't consume any sports products soley because of the reporters or commentators.

But I do avoid sports products when the opportunity allows because of reporters or commentators. And I'll readily admit that Maria is easy on the eyes and that I'd rather watch and listen to her because of that fact than most of the male reporters or commentators out there.

This.

I think it looks so stupid when they have those shows where there's one token woman sitting on there being the facilitator and then all the men who actually play sports or been lifelong sports people have to sit there and kind of cater to her. It's so amazingly pathetic in ways. Now if women want to pursue sports careers I don't have a problem with that but this tokenism crap it's just sad.

Heard Clay Travis' take on this today and he is spot on. Rachel Nichols is ALL about diversity and inclusion and BLM until it affects her. THEN it's a problem and it needs to happen to everyone else except her. Pretty much your typical "Not in my backyard" Lib mentality.

If there's a way they both lose in the end I'm rooting for it. Unfortunately Maria Taylor's people played this perfectly and she'll probably get that 8 million raise (she may already have).

Tell a liberal or woke Corp that you want to live in a world where race doesn't matter. Ask them if they agree. If they agree, then ask why they insist on always claiming race matters so much. If they disagree, call them a racist and walk off.

If affirmative action, reparations, "poc" only spaces and jobs, etc weren't pushed on the daily, then people like Nichols wouldn't assume people like Taylor are getting a job they're both competing for because they're the rights color. It's not rocket science. When you have this crap in college admissions and diversity departments in corporate America looking to fill quotas and make sure they have the right rainbow of skin tones instead the most qualified individuals, it's really hard to show that someone wasn't hired because of their skin color. When you make it a point to ensure people of a certain look get hired or promoted, it shouldn't be a surprise that other people assume that's why they got hired or promoted in the first place.

Try "welcome to the world of human beings". Everyone, including "black ESPN employees" does some version of this about all sorts of topics all the time.

The irony in all this is that Maria Taylor is really good at her job, well respected, polished, professional, tenured, oh and shes a smoke show. Shes absolutely deserving of that NBA finals job. She is younger and hotter than Nichols which probably played a part in her getting that job over her. If she were white or someone like Erin Andrews, then Nichols would've never made those comments. What if this was Jemelle Hill when she worked at ESPN, would Nichols have made those same comments?

Not like Taylor is Malika Andrews who is still pretty new to her job and getting her feet wet.

What a rough week for ESiPN, this article combines with the reports that Taylor wants to be paid like SAS at $8 mil/year (laughable as she doesn't bring in nearly the number of eyeballs that he does).

Just kidding! Couldn't have happened to a bigger group of morons. They are the CNN of sports now
I don't understand why any of these people are worth that kind of money. Who watches sports based on the commentators? It's not like I'm not going to watch college sports because Maria Taylor or Erin Andrews is on the sidelines. The whole thing is nuts.
Sideline reporters exist so that ESPN can pad their diversity numbers.
Not surprisingly, the woke white woman lost out to a black (now woke? - not sure) woman.
That fate awaits all pandering white libs.

I liked Taylor on the SEC network during football season. Don't watch regular ESPN so not sure what other shows she has

Yep. You would think some network that has an interest in making money would have figured this out. If all you want is some hottie holding a microphone that can speak with reasonable intelligence you can have 1000 women lined up out the door who will do it for cheap and most people won't know the difference. Not exactly a shortage of guys that want to sit around talking about sports either.

The amazing thing is that networks actively pay huge sums of money to commentators that turn away their audience. If they just spoke about sports and tried to give vaguely objective opinions they would do better in ratings and pay a fraction of what they do now. So many people have tuned out from ESPN and other shows because they don't actually talk about sports anymore and analyze the teams and games without making it either into a political show or some kind of celebrity gossip crapfest.

There are 2 types of commentators that have any interest to me and most sports fans. First are solid professionals that simply call the game and you almost forget their names because they don't make it about themselves. The second are athletes or coaches that played extensively and can give deeper insight into the teams and game that a typical fan won't know or understand. Instead, we get droves of commentators that make everything about themselves and often never played the sports they cover. I especially don't understand the need to have lots of women commentating on football considering none of them ever played Pop Warner much less in the NFL and have no idea what they are talking about.
