Weird that Boeing shares would fall when the plane was made in 1975.

So was it a max?

Yeah those ancient JT8D's (which apparently both failed?) don't exactly have much in common with the MAX engines. Neat that both pilots survived, can't be easy to get out of a low wing jet (with engines under the wings) that just ditched in the pacific.

Engine failure causing a forced off field landing is very survivable if procedures are followed. The variables that would significantly complicate this in my opinion would be the difficulty of seeing the surface of the water at night combined with the swell size, which could potentially cause a break up during deceleration. Either way, good work by the pilots.

JT8Ds are extremely reliable engines, if maintained properly.

I can't believe both pilots survived. They must be pretty freaking good at their jobs to have pulled that off.

"very survivable" in my mind doesn't match with "jet engine aircraft ditching in the pacific at night." Sure, it can happen, and did, but it's not exactly a 'sure thing, just follow the procedures.'

And they ditched the aircraft at night no less.

It's easy, anyone can do it. Twice. Just ask Tom Hanks.

Agree. I was commenting first in general with regard to forced off-field landings due to loss of thrust. They have a low fatality rate across both GA and commercial flight. Then I listed a few complicating factors, and applauded the pilots' efforts. If I was unclear, I apologize.

If they just hand an engine failure but still had an intact aircraft with control and instruments and followed their training and established the correct glide path and landing profile for water, they had a reasonably good chance of success.

There are some real pilots left, but their numbers are dwindling.

Looks like they got pretty close to making it back.

One pilot in "serious" condition, one "critical" .

Oh please, everyone learns about that when they're a kid. Stop drop & roll, always have an evacuation plan, don't talk to strangers, night crashes over the pacific....the usual.

Both engines at the same time? Wonder if they ran out of fuel.

Aircraft lost was N810TA.

Sounds like they lost engine 1, and then the second due to overheating so it wasn't an instant loss on both.

Can somebody in aviation explain what exactly happens when a jet engine overheats?

Does it automatically shut down or is there an override in an emergency?

How common is an overheat situation?

Hi Norman. Haven't chatted with you in a long time.

See my above link with the flight path.

Doubtful it was a "run out of fuel" issue.

Looks like they had an "Oh crap" issue that no pilots want to deal with and they made a fast return to base.Maybe they were very heavy, but doubt fuel was an issue.Engine loss, very heavy, and then whatever else happened... Who knows.

Hope those guys are okay.

Wild speculation here: those are old engines. Perhaps they pushed the throttle up on the surviving engine and over temped it. It's very unusual to lose a second engine after a very unusual loss of a first engine

If I hear the recording at 1:07 + , they were cleared back to base, but indicated they needed time to run check lists. Does that sound correct?

Ugh.

At the very end, when ATC was indicating the freq to click on the runway lights for the field to their north, those guys still seem awfully cool, calm, and collected.

Ah, I thought it was the content of the question.

Makes me think of the earliest radio advice every new pilot gets: "Don't drop the airplane to fly the radio".

Amazon packages?

Maricopa County ballots?

Iranian money delivery?

Losing an engine shortly after takeoff and then the pilots reporting the other one "running hot" before losing it too makes me highly suspicious of the fuel they took on before the doomed leg. Their departure time was in the middle of the night. Did they take on avgas instead of Jet A by mistake?
