DC-295 Reopens After Pedestrian Bridge Collapsed Onto Traffic

Investigators believe a truck struck the bridge, causing it to come loose and collapse.

I kind of thought that might be the case as it looked like he ran into it from the other side. Still what a mess.

I don't think unintended instability in a 12 story building is ever a good thing.

Most foundations are expected to have, and are designed for, some movement unless they're on solid granite.

Hence my use of the word, "unintended". And, having a compliant foundation, per your reference, does not necessarily reflect structural instability.

3 dead and 99 unaccounted for. Looks like 100+ deaths. Sad.

With 2mm rate in 90 - that's almost 2-1/2 inches if it didn't increase in rate. How had they not already condemned the building?

This is bad. May end up close to the Hyatt walkway collapse. There's been some mass casualty dam collapses. The Titanic?

Out of morbid curiosity...

If it's 100+ dead, where would this rank among catastrophic disasters all time in the US? Gotta be in the top 10 I'd imagine.
Even excluding natural disasters and accidents during wartime, it would not be within the top 10.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disasters_in_the_United_States_by_death_toll

They have the Tulsa Race Riot at 300 deaths, which is heavily disputed, but the politically correct number. The rest seems to be accurate.

114 dead in that one. MGM fire killed 78. Titanic is not modern era nor building collapse.

In terms of engineering disasters in the US, this would be #2 or 3...

Certainly behind the Hyatt Regency, but that may be it.

I have a distant relative in the ~99. At least, has not reported in to his mother.

The St. Francis Dam would be above both.

Seems like several years ago everything in FL was being swallowed up by sinkholes. Then the reporting stopped, or the sinkholes stopped... Was thinking about this a few weeks ago because I thought about a friend had a sinkhole during that time that was near their property that thankfully stopped progressing.

2/3's of a beach side 12 story condo collapsed in Miami. Like an implosion, but most likely caused by a sinkhole as opposed to explosives.

Sounds like a mixed condo unit with residents and rentals.

Here's what is probably a stupid question: how can a sinkhole (if there was one here) develop less than 300 feet off the water? Was this an "engineered" island like they built out from Manhattan when the built the Trade Centers??
TexasRebel

underground water movement.

the soil under your feet is not static. It is constantly in motion. Some places that motion happens a whole lot faster.

if there is water moving underground and creates a void, that void can become the path of least resistance. As more water moves through there, it will erode the soil away, but not on the surface. This can be exacerbated by developed surface structures. The structures (a parking lot for instance) can hide the subsurface erosion longer than an undeveloped surface would. until everything hiding the sinkhole suddenly falls.

I can't find any really good high resolution photos of the debris.

The one thing I find odd is the amount of what appears to be clean rebar.

Until I can see more pics it's just guessing (trying to sperate what is rebar vs conduit etc) but rebar should not be pulling out of the concrete like that.

Like on the right you should see a whole lot more big sections of concrete stuck to the rebar.
The rest of it just peeled right out.

Maybe shoddy construction with the rebar just tossed in the bottom of the pour instead of spacer placed in the proper depth.

Did they even use chairs back then? I can't imagine there are a lot of rocks in the area for them to go grab when it's time to place rebar.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava said Friday morning that the number of people who are unaccounted for in Thursday's building collapse increased to 159 dramatically higher than the 99 reported earlier. The official death toll rose to four.

She said 120 people are now accounted for but stressed that all the numbers are "fluid" because some residents may not have been in the building when it collapsed

The clean rebar was the first weird thing I noticed as well, however I've reserved judgement until I can see higher resolution pictures. In all my years in construction, I've never seen rebar come out so clean over those spans during a demo. I have seen small section that appear to not have bonded to the concrete, but no more than a couple feet.

Makes you wonder if the concrete expanded away from it, but I think it's more likely some effect of the collapse ripped surface oxidation off, or shook it off, or caused it to flake off, like stretching perhaps.
