I don't understand what this big push against hunting and fishing is. I hate to break it to people, but if you don't manage wildlife populations, then there is a very good chance they will overpopulate which can lead to less food for the animals, less habitat, etc. which in return will cause the population to starve, get more diseases, and die off. Does that make people feel good????

I have no problem with hunting, but this assertion is ridiculous. Wildlife populations have gotten along just fine on their own for literally billions of years without people managing them. It's called nature.

When people basically exterminated the predator species, wildlife management through hunting has become important for the health of the prey populations.

Rural Oregon ready for the split
This would do it.

Otherwise ranch land in Eastern Oregon just became really cheap.

The odds of something like that passing has to be incredibly low.

Populations have to be managed by people due to the rapid reduction of wildlife habitat in certain areas resulting from expansion of urban areas, housing development, etc.

Key word here is "proposed". Idiots propose idiotic legislation all the time and in every state. I doubt this gets any traction in the Oregon legislature, let alone passes.

That said, if any state could pass something so overwhelmingly stupid, it's Oregon.
This is an initiative petition and is not originating in the legislature. Activists are busy gathering signatures to get it on the 2022 ballot. Similar activity is taking place in Colorado.

The initiative in Colorado includes, among other things, making it unlawful to slaughter an animal before it lives at least 25% of its natural life. That's pretty sneaky since it almost sounds reasonable, at least to those who don't know how long livestock and poultry can live. This would pretty much eliminate livestock production in Colorado by making it cost prohibitive to feed animals for that length of time.

Barf face. A 5 year old steer/ cow makes for some awfully sh*++y steak. I guess I'll buy veggie steak or a lab raised New York strip.
No you wont. Texas angus would just go to the price of Japanese Wagyu.

Are you ****ing kidding me? You destroy entire communities of 170 year old ranches, and deprive everyone simultatiously of the way they make their living and you think they are going to ask? Eastern Oregon has shot it out with the feds over stuff much more trivial.

Look at Idaho. They brought back the Wolf population but then decided that the very marginal resultant livestock loss in areas where human activity eliminated sufficient prey populations was unacceptable. Now they'll begin exterminating the state Wolf population to below 200. Poisoning, trapping, night hunting, helicopter pursuit, etc. Rapid population decrease.

People foul up natural equilibrium and assume they're the only solution. It's getting to the point (not that it hasn't been ramping up for a couple hundred years) where human existence isn't congruent with the existence of most other species of animal that we don't actively farm or manage.

You seem to be arguing that the animal rights twits are somehow going to overthrow the state government and the courts and end ranching.

As I've suggested in the past, it's all right with me to reintroduce wolves to parks provided that they first start with Central Park in New York City.

And feral hogs.

I wonder if they would allow helicopter hunting of feral hogs in Central Park.

We are talking about the same people that get their jollies by allowing a woman to kill a baby. Logic is not their strong suit.

Coming to a state near you. you can forget cheap meat once this starts. We may have 10 more years but on the decay curve acceleration we are on, you can bet it is coming.

We are seeing this in pet care. Once you break the legal threshold that animals are no longer chattel property, malpractice insurance skyrockets for vets, insurance comes in and following shortly there after, government regulation and inflated healthcare cost and then all the other beautiful things that democrats bring.
There is already a law on the books against doing harm to animals. That one provides exemptions for hunting , fishing and ranching. The new law proposes all the exemptions be eliminated. The problem is the way it is promoted, people that do not read the actual proposal will think they are just providing protection for domestic animals , when it fact they are voting to be a state of vegans.

That or just sourcing all meat processing from other states which will kill aglife for Oregon

You're assuming elections aren't rigged everywhere and that the people of urban Oregon have an iota of common sense between them all.

Both bad assumptions.

The very LAST state that should be exemplified as the role model to follow is Oregon.

Other close seconds... Washington, California, Illinois and New York.
The only state that entered the Union as a "Whites Only" State, written into their state constitution
