I recently heard about this proposed new law in Oregon. If passed I could see it spreading to other states. There has already been talk of it in Colorado. It basically makes it illegal to cause harm to any animal. I know that sounds like something good, but when you read it you realize it would ban all hunting, fishing and ranching in the state of Oregon.

Coming to a state near you. you can forget cheap meat once this starts. We may have 10 more years but on the decay curve acceleration we are on, you can bet it is coming.

We are seeing this in pet care. Once you break the legal threshold that animals are no longer chattel property, malpractice insurance skyrockets for vets, insurance comes in and following shortly there after, government regulation and inflated healthcare cost and then all the other beautiful things that democrats bring.

They're making a civil war just too damned easy. Please continue to eliminate your food source industry and keep sending it south and to the Midwest...

There is already a law on the books against doing harm to animals. That one provides exemptions for hunting , fishing and ranching. The new law proposes all the exemptions be eliminated. The problem is the way it is promoted, people that do not read the actual proposal will think they are just providing protection for domestic animals , when it fact they are voting to be a state of vegans.

Vegans get excited about this until they realize that billions and billions of animals are killed in farming. I mean an insect is an animal too.

Proponents say there is already enough food produced in Oregon to feed its citizens. They say ranchers can just convert their ranches to farming. They say if an animal dies of natural causes they can be processed. See how " reasonable" these folks are?

Key word here is "proposed". Idiots propose idiotic legislation all the time and in every state. I doubt this gets any traction in the Oregon legislature, let alone passes.

That said, if any state could pass something so overwhelmingly stupid, it's Oregon.

This is how stupid stuff like this get passed all the time. People think it is so outlandish they do not have to be concerned. They get busy and let down their guard. Many people don't even realize what this is all about. They don't even realize that they need to oppose it.

Such an incredible cultural disconnect between the ruling class and the non-ruling class in Oregon. Can't think of another state that is this extreme. Michigan, Washington, and Illinois are probably the most similar in terms of urban/rural culture differences.

This is an initiative petition and is not originating in the legislature. Activists are busy gathering signatures to get it on the 2022 ballot. Similar activity is taking place in Colorado.

The initiative in Colorado includes, among other things, making it unlawful to slaughter an animal before it lives at least 25% of its natural life. That's pretty sneaky since it almost sounds reasonable, at least to those who don't know how long livestock and poultry can live. This would pretty much eliminate livestock production in Colorado by making it cost prohibitive to feed animals for that length of time.

most grazing land isn't really suited for economic crop production. if it was then good chance it would be in crop production in the first place.

also unless something has changed, you can't process dead livestock, mad cow disease stopped that.

The very LAST state that should be exemplified as the role model to follow is Oregon.

Other close seconds... Washington, California, Illinois and New York.

The left has already won the civil war. Hate to break it to you. The time to put an end to this garbage in its early stages was 30 or 40 years ago. It's past of the point of no return, and the right has no answer for it. The leftist media and federal agencies have already been expanded and weaponized to the point that any kind of meaningful resistance, especially military-type resistance, will be quickly identified and squashed. And there isn't enough grass-roots organization and coordination among those on the right to cobble together an effective resistance anyway. The right has always been more interested in being left alone than being politically active and organized, and rightfully so since free human beings should have the right be left alone, but that's obviously not how the left operates. It's too far along to reverse at this point. Time to prepare for the downfall of free civilization.

It's a ballot proposal, so it would be up to voters, not the legislature. If they can sell it to Portlandia, which they might be able to do, it could pass.

I don't understand what this big push against hunting and fishing is. I hate to break it to people, but if you don't manage wildlife populations, then there is a very good chance they will overpopulate which can lead to less food for the animals, less habitat, etc. which in return will cause the population to starve, get more diseases, and die off. Does that make people feel good????

These idiots do not understand that hunting license fees and associated money spent on hunting alone brings in millions of dollars and used in conservation and preservation of wildlife and habitats.

As an example, their are more deer in this country now than when the Pilgrims hit Plymouth rock.

And the predators that kept them in check no longer exist in any meaningful numbers.

All except motor vehicles.

I have no problem with hunting, but this assertion is ridiculous. Wildlife populations have gotten along just fine on their own for literally billions of years without people managing them. It's called nature.

From https://www.denverpost.com/2021/06/21/animal-cruelty-livestock-colorado-ballot-measure-initiative-16-invalid/

Quote:

The Colorado Supreme Court on Monday rejected a ballot measure that would have placed substantial limits on the state's ranching and meat production industry, ruling that Initiative 16 violates the state's single-subject requirement.

Initiative 16 would have gone on the 2022 ballot. Its goal was to add livestock and fish to the state's animal cruelty law and redefine what constitutes a "sexual act with an animal," including practices often used in breeding and animal husbandry.

"The initiative's central theme is incorporating livestock into the animal cruelty statutes, but expanding the definition of 'sexual act with an animal' would criminalize additional conduct regardless of whether that conduct is directed at livestock or other animals," the justices ruled.

The justices ordered that the state's Title Board "strike the titles" from the measure and "return the initiative to its proponents."

About the 25% of it's natural life, they defined the natural life of cattle to be 20 years:
Quote:

Initiative 16 would also have required livestock to be slaughtered only after an animal lived a quarter of its natural lifespan estimated at 20 years for cattle or eight years for a chicken which would vastly change current practices, considering cattle are often killed for their meat at a younger age.

They should call the proposal the Mad Cow Disease Protection Act.
