Curious the boards thoughts on homeschoolers participation in UIL. The senate just passed HB547 16-14 so it looks like this will happen after other failed attempts.

We homeschool our son and I personally don't have a major leaning either way, however my wife is pretty fired up. She didn't want this to pass as it may potentially blaze the path to invite more government into our homeschool choices.

Other states have it. Tebow was home schooled, but played football for his local HS.

I don't think it intermingles much of the two...just allows your kids to take advantage of the districts extracurriculars that you already pay for.

Don't like it. The kids aren't going to the HS but can show up to play? The biggest issue is no pass/no play. Who is going to make that decision? The teacher is the parent and they will pass their kid regardless of performance or rigor. How much testing is required to be considered passing in a subject? Kids that go to HS have an independent party (the teacher) deciding if the student is allowed to play.

So it's pick and choose public education. The classroom isn't good enough, nor are the kids within the school, but they're good enough to play football with.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

Correct. They typically pick an "academy" path to get a football scholarship.

I predict most school districts will offer distant learning this fall and your child will be eligible for all extra-curricular activities. The genie is out of the bottle and some students (and parents) will prefer virtual instead of in person learning. Honestly, I would prefer to stay at home and play.

I like it. It's probably a best of both worlds scenario. Better education and still get exposure to team activities (band or sports) that aren't available in most home school cooperatives.

CS and Bryan both have announced no virtual in the fall. For their part CS said there wasn't sufficient interest to fund it.

And they will keep going to the elite Academies. Why bother with UIL?

Ours is offering a virtual academy in the fall, but no extracurriculars if you're in it. Including prom.

The unintended consequences could be devastating for certains groups.

It will be great for financially stable & educated parents like most of us on TexAgs who consider our kids' education to be a top priority. However, many families don't see education as important as we do.

The only incentives under the current system to send their kids to school are those extra-curricular activites. These activities are also the only incentives these kids have to actually learn something.

I expect many of these families to merely pretend to homeschool. If you think star athletes (or even worse, wannabe star athletes) who can barely spell their own names is bad now, just wait until they never go to school at all.

It is time to stop hating on home schoolers(I used to be a hater).
If only all of our kids could be homeschooled we would actually compete with the rest of the world in academics.

Public schools are put forth and monitored by the govt. teachers are govt. employees.

Tell me what the govt does at low cost with efficiency?

Or think the public school option isn't appropriate but still want their kids to participate in extracurricular that they most likely pay for through their property taxes.

The public school system we all pay for is failing miserably.
There are bigger issues to worry about than this one.

That's absurd. For those parents, the schools are baby sitters and food for their kids. No way they will allow them to stay home. Lmao

I would have opened up the UIL academic competition to privates school individuals as well.

It would have been nice to compete for the UIL scholarships.

Find them a homeschool team, or AAU.

We all pay for schools but that doesn't mean anyone off the street can come eat in the cafeteria.

But they are school age not some random person on the street. If their parents want to home school them and then take advantage of the school athletics in the district they are assigned I have no problem with that.

Also AAU costs money and so do some home school teams.

Depends on the school.

If they compete in UIL that costs than they pay that fee just like someone attending that school.

I oppose it from the opposite side. Homeschoolers in Texas have great freedom. I don't want this to open the door to more regulation.

When my daughter graduated in 1998, there were a number of kids who walked the stage that no one knew who they were. learned later that evening they were home school kids.

I agree with others who said our kids weren't good enough to around- except for the special stuff.

Home school kids who live in the school district, and whose parents pay taxes like everyone else, can participate in extracurricular activities including sports here in Tennessee. And it works great.

Good for Texas for finally catching up with the times.

Correct. They typically pick an "academy" path to get a football scholarship.

They pay for the same athletic facilities and coaches that you do, so yes they should have that choice of homeschooling and then having extracurricular activities through their local high school.

I don't think it has a thing to do with your kids being good enough. The teachers and/or public school bs is what's not good enough.

Ours went to a good private school but most of their best friends were all in the public school that we live near.... and financially support.

If public school parents don't want home schooled kids getting access to any extracurricular activities, then I'm sure they agree that the district needs to stop taxing those families.
