CA resident here. Making this election a referendum on the pandemic response is a political loser for the recall crowd. Anti-mask and anti-lockdown may be have an enthusiastic and fired up base, but they have nowhere close to the votes.

An independent with huge name recognition could likely win on platform of solving homelessness, cost of living, and bread-and-butter kitchen economics that Newsome has zero credibility nor support. "The reasons for the recall were misguided, but now that we're here we have a chance to fix CA" would have a chance. A culture war election has none.

It doesn't take much of a platform. Quit taxing your middle class and smaller businesses out of the state and allow law enforcement to do their jobs. But good luck finding an "independent with name recognition" in your state that's willing to take a real stand on something outside of pandering to the democrat party.
