The debate was triggered in part by an incident last year in which a driver pulling a trailer drove through a crowd of protesters on a highway in Tulsa, Okla., forcing some of those demonstrating to the edges of an overpass. One person fell off the overpass.

No charges were filed against the driver, however, and some Republican lawmakers arguing in favor of the new legislation said the incident showed the need for their measure.

Why would a new law even be needed?

A mob surrounds a random car and the driver has a reasonable fear for their life or safety. Self defence via use of lethal force would be fine if they had a pistol to defend themselves, why not a car?

It's basically just a "**** you" to antifa. I can't think of any freeways blocked in Oklahoma, but it will discourage people from doing it anyway now.%A0

I drive my Jeep with the doors and top off for a large part of the year.

If I saw that mob, I'm not waiting for them to surround me and pull me out. I'm going to GTFO there. And if I have to do that...I'd feel bad, but not bad enough to allow someone to kill me,

Much more than the driver thing. Looks like it brings the hammer to rioters as far as sentencing.

Actually, the criminals did block a highway in Tulsa during the fentanyl OD protests, and someone got run over and killed. Of course the local BLMarxists raised hell but the driver was not charged. But all it takes is one Soros DA in OKC or Tulsa to put the screws to everyday citizens, so the legislation prevents that.

Peaceful protesters don't block traffic. You want to protest peacefully? Don't do it in the middle of the street.

Good. To tie it to the cop shooting threads. Drivers have to make split second safety decisions? Are they being carjacked or is it mostly peaceful protestors who occasionally pull someone out and Rodney King them.

If the driver assumes incorrectly one way it can cost them their lives.
If the driver assumes incorrectly the other way a protestor can get killed and they go to jail.

This just clears the waters for people not to protest in the middle of the street.

Common sense is dead. Common sense says block a road and scare or piss off a driver you just may die. Having to have a law about this is about stupid but probably smart. I say protesters block road should be no brakes used and pretty soon they would not block roads.

This makes absolute sure that the driver is protected no matter what. It is the type of bill that could kill protests easily.

I lived in OKC during the BLM protests last summer. They were mostly peaceful and the local police kept their cool and were able to lower the tension in most cases. As I recall, there were only a few cases of protesters blocking streets, mostly near the police headquarters. No one got injured and I think most drivers saw what was happening and were able to turn around.

Also, there were only a couple of small scale looting/destroying property incidents. The OKC DA is a real hard ass and charged 3 or 4 of the looters with felony crimes. I don't now how that turned out (we moved out of state), but it sure as hell pissed off the BLM supporters.

That seems pretty reasonable.
