In a perfect world, when Floyd was fading they should have picked him up and throw him in the car. He was too weak to fight back at that point and if Floyd was faking it, throw him back down. Four cops vs. drugged out dude in handcuffs wouldn't be hard to take back down in my opinion.
Failure to do what should be done in a perfect world is not murder.

That was the point of the defense's questioning the MMA guy about how often people go unconscious and come back immediately trying to fight. It was a good argument the defense made and was specifically centered on this question, should Chauvin have kept his knee on Floyd's neck after he went unconscious.
How is Chauvin or any of the officers to know Floyd just wasn't playing possum? If they let up he'd try to escape or inflict harm to himself or others.
How would that happen with him face down and handcuffed? Hard to play possum in his state and that situation. Was he going to flip, jump from his ass up and start running with 4 officers around? Of course not.

Were he in his right mind to begin with he would have gotten into the squad car. They were not dealing with that type of suspect.

Excellent point...follow the book.
When I worked at boys home, had one to go ape sheet,. It took 3 of home staff to take him down. He kept banging his head on floor, saying he wanted to die. While they held his body, I held his head so he wouldnt batter himself to death. As he relaxed, I let go, and he bit the crap out of me-- broke the skin and I had to get tetanus. All this happened after staff told him to chill, and he kept threatening them and saying he would kill us all.

Had one kid in regular school who took PCP, It took three of us to get him out of class, he broke my Ag buddy's jaw, and my glasses and cut my face.

You just never know. And all those text book takedowns get thrown out when the adrenaline and survival starts flowing. some people, you dont throw flowers at.

Combination of it's possible to run while handcuffed and the fact that 4 officers couldn't force him into the car.

Key maybe too harsh, but I think you're right that it definitely applies. The negligence aspect of the manslaughter charge will be determined at the speed of which they call the ambulance, IMHO.
I read that they first called for an ambulance very soon after taking him out of the car when they saw the shape he was in.
Floyd was thrashing around the back of the squad car hit his face on the plex partition. He was bleeding from the mouth and/or nose and that prompted the call. When he was taken to the ground, Chauvin increased that call to Code 3 because they were employing MRT. Again, per the manual.
Thanks.

I had been under the impression that they called it in earlier than that.

This trial can't realistically be about the murder charge. That was absurd. I think it's about manslaughter.

Officer Lane does a quick pat down of Floyd and retrieves a methamphetamine pipe from his pocket. Floyd resists getting into the back seat of the squad. He drops to the ground and begins to complain that he cannot breathe and that he is claustrophobic. Floyd continues to resist saying, "I want to lay on the ground! I'm going down, I'm going down"

It was at this point that Floyd's heart arrhythmia began. Arrhythmia occurs when the electrical impulses that coordinate heartbeats stop working properly, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly, or a combination of all three. Blood flow through the heart is impaired and slowed. This results in a reduced transfer of oxygen to the blood from the lungs and reduced circulation of oxygenated blood throughout the body. Arrhythmia produces chest pains and a feeling of shortness of breath, even though physical breathing continues normally.

I was thinking earlier today that this trial would have been much shorter if Floyd had a smart watch on that monitors heart rate.

Thinking the same thing. Can't see the relevance unless they're trying to prevent the defense from casting doubt on audio/video.

See how that can dovetail with this:

Quote:

Over the past decade, the excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) has raised continued controversy regarding the cause and manner of death of some highly agitated persons held in police custody, restrained or incapacitated by electrical devices. At autopsy, medical examiners have difficulty in identifying an anatomic cause of death, but frequently cite psychostimulant intoxication as a contributing factor. The characteristic symptoms of ExDS include bizarre and aggressive behavior, shouting, paranoia, panic, violence toward others, unexpected physical strength, and hyperthermia. Throughout the United States and Canada, these cases are most frequently associated with cocaine, methamphetamine, and designer cathinone abuse. Acute exhaustive mania and sudden death presents with behavioral symptoms that are identical to what is described for ExDS in psychostimulant abusers. Bell's mania or acute exhaustive mania was first described in the 1850's by American psychiatrist Luther Bell in institutionalized psychiatric patients. This rare disorder of violent mania, elevated body temperature and autonomic collapse continued to be described by others in the psychiatric literature, but with different names until the first cases of ExDS were seen at the beginning of the cocaine epidemic by medical examiners. The neurochemical pathology examination of brain tissues after death revealed a loss of dopamine transporter regulation together with increases in heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) expression as a biomarker of hyperthermia. The similarity in the behavioral symptoms between extremely agitated psychostimulant abusers and unmedicated psychiatric patients suggests that a genetic disorder that leads to dysregulated central dopamine transporter function could be a precipitating cause of the acute delirium and sudden death. While the precise cause and mechanism of lethality remains controversial, the likely whys and wherefores of sudden death of ExDS victims are seen to be "biological," since excessive dopamine in the brain triggers the manic excitement and delirium, which unabated, culminates in a loss of autonomic function that progresses to cardiorespiratory collapse.
