judge said 9:30 yesterday, but court tv is still recapping yesterday.
The attorneys and the judge will discuss some motions this morning before the jury is brought in. They should start at 9:00.

Does the judge not think the jury knows everything that is going on? Did he sequester them with no internet, TV, or outside contact?

Yeah, it's very useful to see the reporting in here of what's actually being said. Too much speculative thought going on out in the world, especially from people who don't listen to the testimony and don't read the documents.

Where I'm still confused is that the prosecution in the opening statement listed their theory of the crime as Chauvin's weight preventing George Floyd from expanding his rib cage. If that's what they're going with (and it makes sense as it solves some of their problems with the lack of neck damage in the autopsy and Floyd being able to talk), why are they toying with choke holds, knee on neck blocking his airway, etc., in their witness testimony?

Okay. I didn't intend to talk down, but it is not an often-used word.

State is taking a scatter shot approach without one coherent theory of the case other than Floyd-good, cops-bad.

That's why there is so much focus on the emotional side of the case.

While we are waiting. Here's a discussion of excited delirium. This subject will likely come into the trial via expert testimony.

Quote:

Over the past decade, the excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) has raised continued controversy regarding the cause and manner of death of some highly agitated persons held in police custody, restrained or incapacitated by electrical devices. At autopsy, medical examiners have difficulty in identifying an anatomic cause of death, but frequently cite psychostimulant intoxication as a contributing factor. The characteristic symptoms of ExDS include bizarre and aggressive behavior, shouting, paranoia, panic, violence toward others, unexpected physical strength, and hyperthermia. Throughout the United States and Canada, these cases are most frequently associated with cocaine, methamphetamine, and designer cathinone abuse. Acute exhaustive mania and sudden death presents with behavioral symptoms that are identical to what is described for ExDS in psychostimulant abusers. Bell's mania or acute exhaustive mania was first described in the 1850's by American psychiatrist Luther Bell in institutionalized psychiatric patients. This rare disorder of violent mania, elevated body temperature and autonomic collapse continued to be described by others in the psychiatric literature, but with different names until the first cases of ExDS were seen at the beginning of the cocaine epidemic by medical examiners. The neurochemical pathology examination of brain tissues after death revealed a loss of dopamine transporter regulation together with increases in heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) expression as a biomarker of hyperthermia. The similarity in the behavioral symptoms between extremely agitated psychostimulant abusers and unmedicated psychiatric patients suggests that a genetic disorder that leads to dysregulated central dopamine transporter function could be a precipitating cause of the acute delirium and sudden death. While the precise cause and mechanism of lethality remains controversial, the likely whys and wherefores of sudden death of ExDS victims are seen to be "biological," since excessive dopamine in the brain triggers the manic excitement and delirium, which unabated, culminates in a loss of autonomic function that progresses to cardiorespiratory collapse.

Regardless of the outcome of this trial, there needs to be a systematic overhaul of police hiring, training, and operating procedures in America.

Who wants to be a cop these days? We're going to have to start drafting citizens because they are so hated. Police Departments can't afford but to take anyone who signs up right now.

I served on a jury recently. Emotion seems to be a winning strategy. Critical thinking is not a skill set of today's population.

Probably. It would be better to root for the facts to come out and the jury to make the correct verdict. Simply rooting for him to get off scott free is just as bad as those hoping he fries regardless of the facts.

Or the attorneys are conferring with the judge in camera. Or maybe a juror is late.

The old saying: When the facts are on your side pound the facts. When the law is one your side pound the law. When neither the facts nor the law are on your side, pound the table.

We are seeing a lot of pounding on the table by the prosecution.

Good luck with the hiring part. The past year, especially, and agenda driven DAs, have caused a lot of good cops to reconsider their professions and will undoubtedly narrow the applicant pool for new cops.

And the bigger problem is that the ones who are less likely to enter the applicant pool are the ones you want in there, while the ones who are more likely to be problematic LEOs are more likely to remain in the pool.

It's just like politics: most of the good potential candidates are turned off by all crap and decide not to run.

My golfing buddy's son just graduated from an academy less than a year ago. Overhauling hiring and training won't work as there are many personalities that will just hide under the radar. The operating is where the rubber meets the road and the bad actors need to get weeded out. Fast. Dirtbags in every profession. cop unions protect the bad ones too much.

I'm reading this thread as a recap and appreciate those providing play by play and commentary.

But I would also sound a cautionary note about the commentary and recaps: the average juror is not as smart or analytical as we are, and is this more likely to respond to the emotional pleas, and their political leanings and biases are going to be much further to the left than the typical reader of this thread.

I would apply the same discount to the commentary on this thread about how the trial is going that I do to Texags preseason baseball write ups.
