Hey Pete - it already exists...it's called a gas tax.

I commute 40 miles to work, 80 miles round trip. I'm paying plenty of tax already for that "privilege".

No, remember, they will tax them for not having to commute.

The Democrats will probably make it progressive like the income tax. The more you drive the higher the tax. Make it punitive for those that have to drive a lot. It's all about forcing people closer to the urban areas where they can be controlled and monitored more easily.

No thanks.

So does that mean that bike lanes, sidewalks, and public transit will also have the "mileage" tax.

Democrats hurting poor workers like always. Low income earners will be most impacted by this but the media would never point that out.

The Fed estimates that they will take in 3.8 Trillion in tax revenue in FY 2021.

If that's not enough to "invest" in the nations infrastructure, then that tells me you are being irresponsible and spending too much on things the government has no business doing.

Conservative states and conservatives in general are going to have to overcome our aversion to the court system. Tie the unconstitutional MF'ers up in writs and complaints.

Along with annoying administrative overhead requirements to track/report mileage and then a new bureaucracy to audit those filings, etc. New regulations to make odometers "hack proof", a fee for older cars if they don't replace their odometer with a government approved version, etc. I simple sounding concept will become a new 25 page annual filing with mileage deductions, credits, alternative minimum mileage calculations, and all sorts of social engineering.

I swear government comes up with the most burdensome and inefficient mechanisms to confiscate money from people.

Amen. Conservatives need to buckle up and start scrapping tooth and nail, especially now with all the new Trump judicial appointments. Don't cede one inch to these Marxists without a fight.

Only way to have electric cars contribute to road taxes. Of course, they will not reduce the gas tax to compensate. I suspect an additional tax on our electric bills as well.

Texans and Californians probably have longer commutes than any other state. Elected officials from both states should have a **** fit over this. Want to bring in more money, figure out a massive tax on companies worth over half a trillion and up. Looking at you Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook and Google. Tax the **** out of them!

Convention of the states agenda add: all tax levies paid by citizens or corporations must be approved by 2/3 of all state legislatures and will only come into effect upon approval by the 2/3.

What is so interesting about that post is how fast it hit 29. It was less than five a moment ago.

It brings to mind how much would like to see a national anonymous poll how many really despise the national govt and media and wouldn't mind a big change. Not the one the left has in mind.

Thus the need "mileage credits", some sort of subsidy program, deductions, etc. to offset the unintended consequences of this new regressive tax they are proposing.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
You can expect this to be 3.5 to 4 cents a mile at the federal level. This is about double the level of the proposed state ones in Illinois (2 cents on trucks) or Oregon (1.7 cents). Best guess it will also include some kind of annual registration that will include reporting your mileage if it isn't tracked through GPS (probably optional). Fuel tax hasn't been updated since 93 so this is their chance.
