MLB has been doing this for over 30 years. I remember thinking it was weird when I watched the Chicago Cubs on WGN in the 1980s. I used to know all the words because I watched so many Cubs games.

I don't think teams played Canada for every game, but perhaps some teams like the Cubs did.
The Blue Jays were American league so they didn't play them unless it was the playoffs which we know the Cubs never made. I'm pretty sure it was every game but maybe that's because Chicago is close to Canada. Not sure if every MLB team did it.
