NY redistricting going to the voters, could be 10 seat swing

Currently, NY state law requires redistricting maps be drawn by a bipartisan redistricting commission. 2/3 of the legislature has to approve the map.

While the bipartisan redistricting committee would stay intact, the new proposal (going to voters in November) would change the voting requirement into a simple majority. In theory, this would allow the Dems to take 5 districts from the GOP.

Then those are written off as lost. No way the GOP wins in NY.

Amazing how the Democrats can just change the rules to make themselves the winners, and nobody has a problem with it on their side. I hate that people have no standards as long as they benefit.

Yeah good luck holding your breath waiting for AOC/Pelosi/Sanders/Schumer (or pick your favorite moderate) lamenting how unfair this is. They know re-apportionment from the census is costing them 4 to 8 seats, so they'll just steal another 10-24 in blue states.

Gerrymandering is absolutely evil, depriving people of their basic rights.

That should be permanently barred in every single state, including New York, and every state that started gerrymandering in 2010

And of course this means Texas as well.

How is this an example of "the system" being "broken"?

This is precisely what happens in redistributing fights in practically every state.

There are computer programs that can do it very fairly. I am not sure why we just haven't gone that way.

Only as "fair" as the input being entered.

That is all that it should be.

They draw out five seats they'll get crushed in a wave election. Gerrymandering always comes back to bite its creators. That's why I don't worry about it.

What about all the folks fleeing NYC? Won't this work against the Dems efforts here?

Fair?

Seriously?

What does fair have to do with anything? Are we a nation of 5 year olds?

33rd & 35th are much much worse examples.

That cut out center portion of 18th is still very predominantly democrat. But Hispanic so Sylvia Garcia gets that area

And as twk can astutely explain, packing democrats into these districts is GOOD for republicans

Purely geographic based maps would draw a significant number of African Americans out of seats.

You okay with that?

Oh I know but the poster I responded to was pretending gerrymandering didn't happen in Texas until 2010. And that is just a stupid and ill informed contention.

Speaking of gerrymandering in TX, the new lines will be drawn to make Lizzie Fletcher seat no longer a tossup. That's going to make some posters very upset.

His brain is a bit "foggy" when it comes to history. Especially when history doesn't support the position he's pushing at the moment.

Username definitely checks out.

I can't tell. Is this sarcasim I am missing?

If not, just FYI, the US wasn't founded in 2010. 1812 was when the phrase was coined, after only the 3rd Census in our history.

Yeah gerrymandering is as old as the republic. Odd to think it started in 2010

That would not be enough. When the results don't lead to an outcome with a certain racial balance, it will be called unfair.
