This is great news all around, though hopefully they can bring in the deadline yet another five years or so. Its now time to get all the infrastructure in place. This can't come soon enough to help greatly reduce our dependency on oil.

DETROIT General Motors wants to end production of all diesel- and gasoline-powered cars, trucks and SUVs by 2035 and shift its entire new fleet to electric vehicles as part of a broader plan to become carbon neutral by 2040, the company said Thursday.

The company plans to use 100% renewable energy to power its U.S. facilities by 2030 and global facilities by 2035 five years ahead of a previously announced goal.

Yes, lets turn over our transportation network to the Chinese and other countries not friendly to the US....

the short sightedness of the 'electric vehicle' crowd never cease to amaze me. But then it's you and your short sightedness is pretty limitless.

How does this impact someone like me who must consistently carry ery heavy loads and gooseneck trailers and is very tough on their truck?

Will electric be able to handle my daily routine?

Where are we going to source the rare earth minerals for the batteries? And how are they going to be mined without environmental destruction now associated with mining them? Also how will we maintain mobility etc when that very finite resource is gone? We going back to horse and buggy and sail boats?

China. They have 90% of the market. Libs/Greens love to scream about the environment (only the US environment).

In other words, GM wants to go out of business.

Of course you think it is a good idea because the unicorn farts and rainbows are going to provide all that energy to charge the batteries.
Don't worry, the feds will bail them out and shaft the bond holders all over again.

Just because lithium is dominate today, doesn't mean there won't be something better to replace it by the time 2035 rolls around.

The physics and chemistry of batteries has changed only very incrementally in 3 decades. There's unlikely to be a battery breakthrough implemented in 10 or 15 years that we're not already developing now. There was some though about capacitors but they don't tend to store power very long or discharge it steadily.

There's really nothing revolutionary on the horizon.

This reminds me of A&Ms grandiose Vision 2020 plan. Nothing but a bunch of "high minded" buzz words vomited up to placate the left. All the while GM realizes this won't come anywhere close to fruition.

What kind of power plants will we produce to get the required electricity to charge the batteries? Solar and Wind are not suitable for stable base loads.
Nuclear is the best option, supplemented by hydro, wind & solar, with combined cycle natural gas and CO2 capture as back-up.

California has rolling brown outs all the time now. What are they going to do when they add millions of EVs to their (lack of) grid?

Especially since most charging will be done at night when solar and wind power production are at their nadir.
