A private business should be able to limit free speech? The first amendment applies to the rights given by the states to the FEDERAL government. It does not have gd thing to do with private business.

NOW, if a site wants to pick and choose what news it puts out, section 230 should absolutely be repealed!

Now even the French are taunting us - how embarrassing.

NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

We're talking the principles behind why 1A exists and why Twitter's behavior is a dangerous, anti-freedom path in a republic vs strict application of 1A. The reality is that twitter and FB essentially have monopolized the town square of 2020 and are picking who speaks and who doesn't based on a set of ever-changing rules they've made up and clearly do not apply evenhandedly. So yes, technically 1A does not necessarily apply. But this is a bigger discussion on the ramifications of twitter's actions given the power they hold in 2020, which many of those ramifications are what 1A tries to prevent

So, you don't like it therefore a private business should be held to the same standard as the government? There to big so they're considered government property? Trying to understand a liberty appreciating individuals logic for having an issue with Twitter on Freedom of Speech grounds.

I'm fine with Twitter doing this. I'm more concerned about Twitter and Facebook colluding with google, Apple and Amazon to kill competitors because that is actually illegal.

i don't consider them govt property, but thanks to the govt, they do enjoy protections and privileges from other private parties that other businesses do not. So if we want to go the freedom route, then let's go all the way and remove the protections they enjoy

They should lose all their protections. They have jumped the shark.

It's a different mindset in Europe. They don't have single party domination as much over there after an election. Almost all of them have to form coalition governments among multiple parties. Almost every person has a party that represents pretty much everything they believe in. Unlike here, where most of us have to decide which issues are most important and hold our nose to vote for people who don't represent 40% of what we believe in. So at least when they regulate, or attempt to regulate certain types of speech, they at least have a little bit of representation.

I think the big distinction here is that at least the German and French citizens have a vote in the process.

If they can ban Trump, they can also ban Merkel and any other politician. This isn't just a US issue. They have set themselves up as the arbiter of global online speech.

Its clear that they are also going to work to block competitors from offering alternative online speech platforms.

So yes, big tech has more power to limit online speech than the government does.

Read more closely. She wants more government regulations on Twitter and Facebook. So ultimately, the government would get to decide which speech to silence. That is even worse.

The solution is to remove the legal protection under 230.

Less government is the answer 99% of the time. Merkel wants more government.
