All of the good schools were shaped by white parents. Some other communities could stand to learn a few things from it

CRT in action.

If you are white and you form your own school ecosystem, you are racist.
If you are white and improve minority schools, you are racist.

Was the French immersion funding a zero-sum proposition? In other words, did the funds raised by the rich white parents take away from the $24,040 per kid in NY state funding elementary and secondary education (that apparently doesn't include federal aid)?

Or is it that remedial subjects are now being taught in French? And minorities are struggling in these basic subjects already without having to deal with a second language?

At this point I'm confused even further. Are the podcasters implying that even though the school was minority led before the evil rich white folk invasion, the vast majority of the schools children were still struggling with remedial subjects? No minority kids were doing well enough to benefit from the language program? That seems like systemic racism and the school leadership ought to be called out on it.

(As an aside, French immersion seems absolutely useless but if it's not tax payer money I don't care what you spend it on).

We used to live in Northern Virginia where taxes were high and we supposedly had one of the best school systems in the country. Many white and black kids had to go to "language immersion" schools. Which was a nice way of saying another group of kids wasn't learning English so the rest of your kids have to learn in another language. I don't remember any podcasts complaining about that. (If you are guessing the language it's German).

At the very least, some of these well meaning white parents may finally discover that the groups they've been "helping" don't give an F about them or their help. And they they are hated simply because they are white and wealthy. That might be a better education than a few conjugated French verbs.

So, the podcast was something like 5 or 6 episodes, each 45 min to one hour long. The issues were much more complex than even what I've explained here, and I'm not going to go into any more details because it would just be too much info (and take too much of my time).

But a big theme of the podcast ties into what I bolded: the "don't give an F" goes both ways. The white parents weren't necessarily interested in long term improvement of the minority schools. They just wanted "enough" improvement for the 2-4 years their kids attended so they could alleviate their guilt and frustration that their kids couldn't get into one of the "better" schools. The hypocrisy was blatantly evident, but the parents weren't so self-aware.

All I can say is listen to the podcast. It's very eye-opening, and not really what a lot of people posting here think it is.

Although, I think these problems are unique to NYC schools, specifically because of the way they operate, I'm certainly not close-minded enough to believe that a wealthy group of parents and/or special interest group couldn't take over any school.

Just listen to the "A Not So Simple Majority" episode of This American Life. Not a similar situation, but definitely a similar outcome.
