Hope you have the same thought in mind when you start clamoring for popular votes and stacking the SCOTUS, traitor.Old Army Metal said:They were also, let's not forget, traitors who had to save their home because otherwise they would no longer be allowed to own people as property.WarAGle said:

Yes, I will still see the confederacy as chiefly a vehicle for starting a separatist state where chattel slavery is not only legal, but a cornerstone of the economy.Tom Kazansky 2012 said:Hope you have the same thought in mind when you start clamoring for popular votes and stacking the SCOTUS, traitor.Old Army Metal said:They were also, let's not forget, traitors who had to save their home because otherwise they would no longer be allowed to own people as property.WarAGle said:

Not sure how that's relevant to some wild scenario where in your mind I am a traitor.
Didn't the Hunley sink three times? I believe Hunley himself was killed during the trials. Seems like insanity to me.Gilligan said:

That is such a deficient and narrow view. High ranking politicians on both sides being a-holes in the years prior had as much to do with what happened as anything. The courage and innovation of officers and men on both sides of the Union and Confederate Navies is the stuff of legends and worth remembering and taking to heart.Old Army Metal said:They were also, let's not forget, traitors who had to save their home because otherwise they would no longer be allowed to own people as property.WarAGle said:

That post reminds of another factor. If you consider especially the Constitution rather the the Revolution, the ramp up to the Civil War is barely 50 years later. Deeply ingrained habits of identifying with your local region more than the Union probably play no small role. Lee agonized over serving his state vs the Union. That might have seemed a more clear choice in 1890.
