The Austin City Council is a cancer. If you live in Austin, please get out and vote in November. Tell your friends and neighbors to vote.

Here's a link to contact the Austin City Council. Please reach out. You don't need to be a resident of Austin to make your voice heard if you either agree or disagree with their decisions.

The city council made it abundantly clear that they are open to outside influence when I watched hundreds of outside influencers step off of their planes from the airport and rush to city hall to speak out against law enforcement.

I know a kid that is a Junior in HS in Austin. His parents are liberal but all he wants to do is be a cop. They are supportive even though they are fearful for him and it's not exactly their cup of tea. They have basically eliminated all of the programs around recruiting kids wanting to become cops now and he is really bummed.

Yup. It's a shame. I've spent 11 yrs in law enforcement and have never experienced the vitriol from elected officials that is actively occurring.

Community leaders are actively removing any type of situation where law enforcement attempts to engage with younger kiddos in a positive light.

Abbott doesn't have the authority to "make" the Austin city council authorize a specific amount of overtime, fund a specific number of academy classes, or fund a specific number of authorized personnel. The city council's BS of magical "money buckets" is nonsense.

This council has struck the departments overall OT budget from ~15 million down to ~2 million dollars in additional to a myriad of other things. They've also eliminated 150 officer positions that are vacant. The department was using the salary of the funded 150 positions to pay officers overtime to backfill patrol.

Due to severe staffing shortages, it has been common practice to fill day to day vacancies on patrol shifts through paying an officer overtime to work on their day off just to achieve 80% staffing in most cases.

With the recent protests, it has been common practice to pay officers overtime to work on their day off to achieve 100% staffing on certain days.

Additionally, the city council has "delayed" two academy classes this year and I believe all academy classes in FY21. They harp on saying "delay" vs canceling, but the truth of the matter is that this will have a detrimental impact on the training pipeline. From original date of application, to being a useful officer responding to a 911 call by themselves, can often be a 2+ yr long process.

I don't know exact numbers, but that's in the ballpark of 250-300 cadets that aren't in the training pipeline to replace officers that we lose through attrition.

This council has turned the city into a dumpster fire by revoking the camping ban and is actively dismantling the police department as we speak.

I am sure there are plenty of other cities that will take Austin cops. Even though SA is run by liberals, their has not been one peep from our crap city counsel about "defunding" our police department.

I think they know better for this city does have a good percentage of conservatives.

You're absolutely correct. The almighty dollar is becoming less appealing everyday. Surrounding agencies are poaching officers left and right. A mass exodus of officers doesn't solve the problem for the citizens that this council is hell bent on creating.

This situation has created a heavily unbalanced tenure in the department. Any officer that is close to retirement is leaving. On the flip side, any officer with less than 4 years is jumping ship to other departments. This leaves a giant abyss of experience and knowledge not being passed down. Great police departments are forged on the knowledge of the old being passed down to the eagerness of the young. Only half of what a GOOD officer knows is learned from classes and seminars. The other 50% is by doing, watching and experiencing the "job". Unfortunately, I've given 7 years of my life to APD and I'm too old for another academy. I'm here for the long haul.

Actually the SA city council has said they will be "reviewing" the budget for the police department, or something like that. They said that a couple of weeks ago.

I keep waiting for cops to grow a pair. They need to call a press conference and dox the city council giving their home addresses. Then announce they are not going to respond to any calls from those residences in less than a few hours and invite the public, good guys and bad, to have at it. Let the ******* council feel the effects of no police protection first hand.

I have white female neighbors with sons and they are stupid enough to still be huge dimocrats. For all I know they loathe their own white sons as much as the dims do. Disgusting. Not exactly mama grizzlies.

It has to do with the detention facility for they have quite a few vacancies.

If the police don't enforce the law and only do their masters bidding they really aren't needed.

Law abiding citizens can be harassed walking down the streets, businesses burned and all the other crap going but police do nothing.

If they aren't going to enforce the law then save tax dollars. Voters get what they vote for.

In more than a few cities, City Councils need to face the literal pre-20th Century imagery of the productive with torches and clubs gathered outside. Way too much attention is being paid to the least contributing and allowing them to run down things for all.

Probably would have sent me down a completely different path of life. Oh well.

The city council has hosted numerous meetings, both during past contract negotiations (pre-covid), and through virtual meetings, allowing for public input. SJWs from outside of Austin gave public testimony against the department. My main point for saying this is that you don't need to be a resident of Austin to engage with this city council.

This is no different than the clowns on this council traveling to the border for photo-ops In years past. Their argument was that illegal detainees in border towns could "potentially" be relocated to Austin while waiting for their immigration hearings and would therefore make them constituents to the city council.

No. Don't do it. Why the f*** should the rest of us tax payers have to fund law enforcement in Austin? If they want to burn, get raped, robbed, looted...then have at it you idiots. Another reason Gov Grabbit is losing his base. You hit them where it hurts...in the wallet.

Because it is the state capital. Actually see it the other way. There should not be a separate Democrat mayorship able to allow lawlessness in that city - in the state capital. It should reflect the state.

I struggle with Abbott threatening to send in DPS. The state shouldn't use state tax dollars to support/interject themselves to fix a city that is intentionally smacking the self-destruct button. This only insulates the citizens from seeing the true effects of the council's actions.

On the other hand, Austin is the state capital. Elected officials from all over Texas have a direct connection to the city and skin in the game to keep the capital city safe.

EDIT: Looks like Titan and 1997Aggie argued both sides of my statement while I was banging out my comment.

The "rest of the tax payers" wouldn't be paying for it. Legislators glad looking at diverting Austin sales tax and property tax straight to APD before being given to the COA. Same exact people who pay for APD now, would pay for us in the future. No one outside of Austin would carry the bill.

Has the word come out yet which specialty units will be affected? I work for COA and we have a very small unit (just two detectives) who work with us out of our facility. It would be very concerning to lose them.

The list is out. Whether it was internally leaked or officially released is another thing. I believe executive staff gave the commanders over affected units until today to ensure all officers were notified of their fate.

I just glanced at the list. The majority of the staffing reallocation is at the officer level. A few cpl's were moved as well as some Sgt's, if their unit or team was disbanded completely. I don't believe any detective positions were transferred.

Most Texas agencies arent going to require another academy, if you're willing to take the paycut. Even plano and arlington have an abreviated academy, last I heard.

Here is how I see it going down. The state will direct the county to expand on what Travis County Sherif is responsible for. They will increase gang units and the rest and start filling the gaps the city has created.

The state would likely help the county somehow with legal means or monetary. The county collects property tax funds and distributes that to the city. What if the county and state decided that some of those funds shouldn't go to the city as a direct result of their piss poor policies. They manage Texas Government Code, and can change it......

First of all: thank you for what you do. Folks like you truly have a servants heart & i appreciate you & your kind more than you know.

That being said I strongly disagree with the bold part for several reasons.

1. This isnt some deep state plot cooked up by the city council, this is what those citizens voted for. They can enjoy bums taking a growler on their yards in the morning because they enabled it at the ballot box. This ties in to point 2...

2. We have to let these cities burn (not literally). There has to be consequences to their actions, otherwise they will never learn. Sometimes loving your brother isnt soft & cuddly, sometimes its letting him learn a hard lesson. This is one of those times. These limousine liberals & bleeding hearts need to stew in the filth they create for a while. We cant continually give them a soft landing, it only empowers them due to lack of consequences.
