Copied this from an email I got today from my kids school district in SA. Unbelievable. We are sending DINNER home now through our public schools.

Body of email:

North East ISD is offering the Fresh Express meal delivery program during virtual learning. The Fresh Express bus will bring meal packages to bus stops near your home. This service is for North East ISD students only.

Please review the attached flyer for more details.

Curbside meal distribution is also taking place at each elementary, middle, and high school campus from 4:00-5:30 pm on school days.

Students are only allowed to receive one meal package per day. Please choose the option that works best for your family.

Parents can pick up meals for their students without the students present. Parents must provide the student ID number and other identifying information in order to receive meals.

Join us for a Fresh Express bus delivered meal starting on August 26!

I think it's intended to be lunch for the next day for the kids who aren't in face-to-face school.

Are you sure they aren't delivering breakfast and lunch for the next day?

Who is picking up the tab? Hopefully not the school (aka taxpayers). The school's job is to teach, the parent's job is to put food on the table.

Your child can't go to school in person, but during the pandemic that keeps them from attending school how it is best delivered, but they bring the ISD employee/agent to your neighborhood for something that isn't the education system's primary purpose. I'm glad they prioritized and figured out how they could do these secondary things safely and without the disruption seen in educating our poor and minority children.

I'm sure you forfeit your food stamps for that day when the school delivers your meal, so at least there is no double dipping.

No I'm not and that is a good point. I just get tired of the waste. I haven't looked into this program yet, but I have looked extensively into the other meal pickup programs that NEISD offers. There doesn't seem to be any way that they manage it as far as making people sign up. You just show up when you want it and don't show up when you don't want it. Waste!

This one provides a link for some kind of registration, at least. Property taxes make up 40% of my mortgage payment, but "we don't put enough money into the public school system in this country".

ISD's already have the tax money. Might as well feed the kids with it. Likely they have a lot of inventory that would otherwise go to waste. Keeps the lunch ladies employed as well.

To be honest, I don't think much of those taxes go to the meals.
Maybe the salaries, but most of the food like this is through NSLP which is a USDA program.

Yes, it is taxes. But not the property taxes in most districts in Texas.

It says one meal per day. Pick up at the bus stop or the school later. One per. No big deal. The at home kids may be doing school on different schedule. No big deal here except all kids should be in school unless they are sick. I guess this must be one of those times we aren't supposed to follow CDC guidelines. Hard to follow when science matters.

A lot of school districts now have summer food programs. The town my parents live in has school busses that drive around to various parts of town. The kids get on the bus and get a sack breakfast and a sack lunch. Its funded by some federal school lunch program. Been going on for several years. They did it a little different this year and the kids didn't get in the bus. They were just quickly handed the bags of food
It's a very popular program in their town. I have no issue with it. Lower income kids need to eat. Not their fault that they are in the situation that they're in.

Y'all make some good points. I'm not opposed to feeding hungry kids, in fact I donate a significant chunk annually to two non-profits that provide food for the poor. I am also all for keeping school staff employed, if possible.

I do not like that they try to give it a cool sounding name like he Fresh Express Bus. There is an actual overall benefit to having a bit of a stigma attached to government handouts.
