Minneapolis Forcing Riot-Wrecked Businesses To Pay Property Taxes Before Getting Permits To Rebuild

Quote:

Cash-strapped Minneapolis, Minnesota, is reportedly demanding that riot-wrecked businesses, including those that were burned to the ground in the protests following George Floyd's death while in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department, pay their property taxes before being allowed to rebuild.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Minneapolis city government is not issuing permits to remove ashes and debris leftover from arson attacks until business owners pay their 2020 taxes in full.
Quote:

Dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed in widespread looting in the days following George Floyd's death. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune, in a separate report, noted that 1,500 businesses were damaged and 150 were burned to the ground. TwinCities.com said, in June, that the damage could cost business owners as much as $55 million and that was nearly two months ago.

Minneapolis officials say they're bound by a law that "prohibits the removal of any structures or standing timber until all of the taxes assessed against the building have been fully paid," but Hennepin county, which enforces that law, says they've suspended enforcement of that law for "riot-damaged properties."
Quote:

" Most property owners must pay $35,000 to $100,000 to clear their sites of debris, with larger tracts such as strip shopping centers costing as much as $400,000, according to property owners," the Star-Tribune reports. "That doesn't include the money those owners must pay to get their permits. On average, the owners of properties destroyed or significantly damaged owe $25,000 in taxes for the second half of 2020, which come due in October."

The Minneapolis City Council and city government are already in hot water with residents after voting this week to strip funding from the Minneapolis Police Department in the midst of a violent crime wave. The city recorded a massive spike in homicides in June, logging 42 homicides already this year. The city saw only 48 homicides in all of 2019.

Every time I think Liberal politicians can't get more scumbag-ish they raise the bar.

Hey Minneapolis business owners - maybe think about who you're voting for next time.

That's insane. They aren't even due yet.

Great way to encourage business to rebuild or come back and ensure a long term revenue stream of property taxes........not.

Why would they even want to rebuild in New Mogadishu? Get the hell out or you'll just get looted again the next time an OD'ing fentanyl addict dies in custody.

What? All of the sudden the law matters? Weren't they bound to protect these businesses from getting burned down in the first place?

Here's an easy way to avoid that problem.

Picture millions upon millions of Americans having their property taken with no compensation, and then being incarcerated in gulags and beaten, tortured, raped, and murdered by leftist ideologues for not completely supporting the leftist government. This is the end goal of the left. It has been the goal of every leftist state in history, and it is the goal of American leftists today.

Every time you hear of the Democrats doing something evil, which will probably be every day, ask yourself if we've reached the gulag mass rape and murder stage yet. If the answer is no, then know that the bar is still going to be raised further by the left, and you won't be surprised when it is.

I bolded the relevant section of that paragraph. The county is in charge of upholding that law, and they are not enforcing it currently. So Minneapolis is just doing this as a way to get money now.

I'd walk away if I had little to no equity in my property. Let the lenders, tax authorities and city figure out what to do. It's obvious they put the desires of rioters above the rights of property owners. Why ever rebuild in that hell hole.

Yeah, if it happens again, they are not going to protect your property, and then they will do this crap again.

If I'm an insurer, I tell them to go to hades, I'm not insuring any biz in that city. Period. Full stop.

I understand that, but the city officials are hiding behind enforcement of law to do what they want regarding taxes. The hypocrisy is the point. They are saying on the one hand they have an obligation to collect taxes, but on the other hand obviously don't feel they have the obligation to protect their citizens.

This will all depend on how the ad valorem tax law works for that state.

In Texas the effective appraisal date is Jan 1st. Doesn't matter what happens the rest of the year the Jan 1 condition is the market value of the year. at least in 95% of the cases as you can have your business inventory valued as September 1st and there some things about Ag that change that. After that value is proposed and approved the taxing jurisdictions create their own tax rate.

Now certain disaster reappraisals and exemptions exist in the Texas code that can change that date.

Now, holding the owners hostage to pay their taxes before a building permit is issued is crooked as hell. But what else would you expect?

Actually the lot value is the cost of the dirt PLUS the cost to cure.

Not when you get out of MSP. It actually very republican outside the major cities (like most states). The hard working blue collar land owners are overshadowed by the inner city ghetto's with many who don't want to work to earn a living, they want a handout from the govt.

I lived in the MSP area about 17 years ago and loved the people for the most part. Reminded me a lot of Texans. Maybe things have changed a lot since then. I don't know.
