He turns 12 in ten days and he wants a phone more than anything and I agree, because he needs a way to take pics for his art Instagram and because of Scouts, he can have one.

But Iphones are ****ing expensive and I am frugal mom.

Get him an iPhone SE if he really wants one. Cheap and reliable.

My 15 year old boy doesn't have a phone yet. His sister's only got them when we needed to know when to pick them up from either after school clubs or sports.

He's probably referring to Apple's mobile messaging iMessage. But when a non-iPhone user is part of a group chat with iPhone users texts are sent as SMS/MMS. These are different messaging protocols and things are eventually headed towards a unified messaging protocol for all smart devices to simplify things--because it's currently unnecessarily complicated.

But no - he doesn't HAVE to have an iPhone to chat with other iPhone users. They may just need to start a new group chat.

as stated earlier, iPhone SE from $399, and probably can get a cheaper deal from whichever carrier you use, that's direct from Apple pricing.

We use Verizon, so I guess that is where we will look.

iPhone SE is the only answer, even for a teenager..

Non iPhones ruin group texts. You can have 99 people on an iPhone and 1 android and you cannot name the group text or add and subtract people from group. Only as strong as the weakest link.

Links do not always auto populate either.

I have a Tracfone. The plan itself runs me a little less than $200 for two years. My current phone cost $100 when I got it.

Not telling you how to raise your kid but I'd avoid giving a 12 year old a smart phone unless you have it locked down significantly (which I'm sure you would). Internet porn is pretty damaging stuff.

So we need to get an Iphone?


Are there like cheap ones on amazon?

I hated not having the stuff my friends did, so this will get him with all his friends on the texts and stuff?

When I was in high school, we didn't even have a phone in the house. I had to drive to my grandmother's house to make a call.

On the other hand, I had a horse and the freedom to ride pretty much anywhere in the area I wished.

So tell him that he doesn't get a phone but you will get him a horse.

buy a used iphone 6 or 7 from marketplace that works on verizon

Another idea.

Next time there is a blm March in Missouri that turns into a riot and looting just make sure you are standing next to the apple store when the windows are broken so you can be the first one in.

One thing to do is look at the used market for an iphone. I'm not sure how you find a good deal on a used iphone without getting scammed, though.

We got our 12 year old an iphone SE for like $400. She had a flip phone for 2 years proving she would not lose or damage it.

A few years ago, the coolest phone was the BlackPhone which was an android. It was built to be far more secure. I don't know that school kids would be cool enough to recognize how cool it was though.

The real answer is a blackberry phone. He can LARP as a boomer business exec.

You can get an older model off Ebay if iPhone is necessary. If it is an unlocked one, then you can use with just about any carrier, but it will usually spell out which carriers it will work with. If the model isn't too old, then should work fine. You can always call and check with your carrier before purchasing if it is in question. I got my Android Phone on Ebay and it was refurbished but in mint condition. Cost me a fraction of what I would have paid for it new. I would tell you to lean more toward getting used from Ebay than places like Facebook market or things of that nature as most sellers on Ebay will have a decent return policy and you can check out their ratings. Less risky that way.

This is by far one of the most tame F16 threads I've ever read.

I've used this for myself and all of my kids. They resell refurbished Iphones and most come like new. They also provide the condition of the battery (most are between 80-90% of useful life). All come with new screens and clean with a charger.

They will need to know your service provider which is important. It's saved me thousands and the 3 iphones I've bought are still going strong.

In all seriousness, don't bother going iPhone just for a chat feature that most people hate/don't use anyways. Chat apps are more prevalent anyhow. All the cool kids are using GroupMe right now. Vastly superior to group texts.

A super minor inconvenience, at worst, is not worth an extra $200.

Get a MOTO G series. They are hands down the best "budget" phone on the market and perfect for non power users. Which should be all 12 year olds.
