This is the biggest bunch of crap I've ever watched. I hope conservatives are watching this and are as motivated to vote against these *******s as much as I am.

Not watching. Is it worse than the Paul Wellstone Memorial?

John Lewis was one of the biggest proponents of the Get Out to Vote movement.

Can I ask what's wrong with encouraging voter turnout?

Every damn politician is a proponent of Get Out the Vote for their side! I suppose every politicians's funeral should be a GOTV rally then!

It's one-sided.

Get Out the Vote isn't constrained to one political party though. It's goal is for larger voter participation in the political process.

If it was a cause Lewis was passionate about, why not let him have it in the same way you'd encourage celebrating the life as everyone else?

Why are we debasing a funeral with a political ad rally?

Nothing. Nothing wrong with wearing a swimsuit either, or walking your dog or shooting off fireworks.

But a funeral is not the place.

You want to mention he was a proponent of the 'get out the vote' cause?...Great. You should. Just like you'd mention he loved to walk his dog. But you wouldn't actually walk your dog at the funeral, because it wouldn't be appropriate. Just like turning it into a vote rally isn't appropriate.

But I think we all know this already, no?

Because nothing is above politics to the Democratic Party not even a funeral.

It's clear I won't win the debate in this thread, but I've been at funerals where there was advocacy for better drug rehabilitation options. I think funerals are celebrations of people's lives and what they stood for, or for the lessons they teach.

John Lewis stood for the expansion of black voter rights. If people who believed in his cause want to continue that fight beyond his death, during the celebration of his life, I don't really see the major issue. It's not like they're standing up and interrupting his funeral to state their objective. They've been encouraging voter participation outside of his funeral.

Again...I dont disagree with that. They should discuss what he was passionate about. What he did/said, what he accomplished, what he did over his lengthy career, etc. It's a celebration of his life.

But turning it into a political rally isnt appropriate.

I don't think we particularly need more uninformed voters.

I haven't personally seen that yet but if true I can concede that that is an overstep and against the spirit of Turn Out the Vote's mission, and not likely what John Lewis would have stood for.

" Even as we sit here, there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting by closing polling locations and targeting minorities and students with restrictive ID laws and attacking our voting rights with surgical precision, even undermining the postal service in the run up to an election. It's going to be dependent on mail-in ballots so people don't get sick,"

-Obama.

How ridiculous is that...His party is trying to close the polling locations, in favor of mail-in ballots. What stupid circular reasoning.

And how unbelievably racist is it, to suggest minorities are incapable of getting a free ID? Minorities should be absolutely insulted by that suggestion.

John Lewis was a vile piece of scum.

I waited 7 days to post that thought, and I don't care that his burial is taking longer than that now. He was human vermin, happy to play the race card whenever he could to his advantage/profit, and I am glad he is dead.

That's strange. I thought blacks had every right to vote as I do as a white man. I guess you don't think they are smart enough to vote. How very racist of you.

...what? This is such a ludicrously bad take, the mental gymnastics you had to jump through to come to it is truly astonishing. I never insinuated that anyone else here was racist for their views, something you so quickly jumped on to claim.

John Lewis was a major contributor to fighting for and working to change national opinions to create the Voter Rights Act, the goal being for everyone to share in the same voting rights we have now.

He then spent years on the Voter Education Project, which was a bipartisan attempt to encourage southern voter turnout and education.

The logical extension of that work is promoting advanced voter turnout. As I've stated in this thread there are ways to go about that in an unbiased and bipartisan way and that it's wrong to make voter turnout political, and even acquiesced if that was the case. .

Know how I know obama was raised without his father in the household? Because any father would have taught him the meaning of a funeral service and how only a low-brow asswipe would use a funeral for a racist diatribe campaign event. He is a low-life piece of *****

I enjoy a good debate but lurked for a while. I don't exactly have views that align closely with this board, but I can appreciate being challenged and also challenging others on their views.
