Best sources for internal China news?
www.gov.cn/statecouncil - State Council of China, usually any important decisions are listed here

Look for reshuffles of the standing committee and the politburo. Obviously propaganda most of the time. Most of the time you must read between the lines. Factions in the CPC are not clear cut and well understood to outsiders. I can't tell you the current power alignment since I've not paid attention to the reshuffles since 2017. Usually look at the current standing members history, check his location and note other important people in the area is the only way to see their faction (even then it is an educated guess).

Hard to showcase China's power and might doing it that way. You have to think like the CCP here.......not like a westerner.

Pretty interesting news update about China with a very anti-CCP slant. Not sure of the accuracy of any of the statements but the the first 10 minutes of the video show some really bad flood damage. Also sounds like Wuhan is getting a little fed up with the CCP between the virus and how this flooding is being handled. Maybe Erudite can extrapolate on some of this as he seems much more in-tune to China than anyone else on this board.

Regardless of my disdain for the CCP, I feel awful for those being affected by this flooding. The average blue collar person in China gets shafted by the elites of the CCP more than anyone else.

Your news "source" is a heavily anti-CCP Falun Gong backed one. Take of that what it will.

1) Wuhan was never Xi's power base. His personally appointed leader of the district supports him. The others under him are a big ???. The Chinese phrase "The sky is high, and the emperor is far away" fits aptly here.
2) Southern China floods every 2 years. Nothing out of the ordinary aside from the magnitude of the flooding. Now, if there was an earthquake alongside the Yangtze drainage basin I would be very worried (Much of it is not geologically stable). Mudslides are a major concern in the upper flow of the Yangtze, if you see mass report of mud slides then you might get an incident where the dam turbines get stuck or damaged.
3) Ministry of Culture censorship on Weibo is extremely fast. You have to be able to censor things within 2-5 minutes of the order. If you work for them you have to have 2 phones and 2 laptops on you at all times. Either this News outlet has people in the MOC or it's a fake. Sometimes the CCP lets these rumors circulate to muddy the waters so people don't know what to believe. See: The phrases "To borrow a knife to kill someone" (Wait and see the weakened victor of a battle, then eliminate them) and "To bait the tiger to leave it's den"(Bait and switch) sayings.
4) Most people in China don't say anything against the CCP in college. It's safer to just not say anything. Also Christianity in China is a malignant cancer that takes the form of Islam in some forms (mainly cult like and terrorist murders). No I don't like the Abrahamic religions, but I don't go out of the way to **** with them.*
5) LOL. The Falun Gong was created as spiritual movement that was co-opted by the CCP for a bit. It is no better than the Catholic Church or Scientology in my opinion.

Regarding the bank run:
Chinese people really, really, really, don't trust banks for some historical reasons. Small bank failures are quite common as they don't have CCP backing.

The large CCP backed banks aren't failing unless the CCP implodes. They are like Chase, Wells Fargo, etc.

*Regarding Christianity. If you go to a US Church run by Chinese people it is different from American ones. They will harass you, they will ruin your life if they feel you are not a true Christian, and they will tell every person to shun you if you don't immediately join, donate, and adhere to exactly what they say. There is no room for doctrinal discussion to my experience. It is not like the preachers in the US church, or like Brother Jeb or the other preachers on campus. They don't tell you to search and reach your own conclusions (Jeb himself says he could be a false prophet, you must be able to judge for yourself). You tasked with not understanding, but following blindly.

May I ask where your experience with China comes from?

Also, my experience with Chinese Christians were branches of churches in College Station. I don't remember hearing your critique, but I do remember repeatedly hearing how hard it was to get anyone to be a leader at those branches. Just the assumption of a leadership role was viewed as tied to corruption. Also, lots of Chinese grad students/families knew there were spies in College Station who would report their religious association back to the CCP.

I wouldn't be so sure as to be spies in College Station for churches. Research I have no doubt does (Most people underestimate the strength US intel network in China too). But we're "out there" so to speak (The CCP would be rather keeping tabs on the children of prominent officials.... So check the Ivys and UC systems). They probably just wanted a way to politely decline without directly saying no. It's a cultural thing.

Nobody wants to go to A&M in China as a first choice. They consider it to be in the middle of nowhere, with backwards people and lines of thought. They'd much rather go to USC (University of Stupid Chinese, aka University of Socal), UC, Ivy leagues. You can tell by the students here. Most are from places like Wuhan university, Chengdu University. Not top tier A list schools. The few from Tsinghua are at the mid- bottom of the top 10% ( usually only the top 10 get to go overseas by merit alone).

There are two ways of acquiring knowledge:
1) experimentation
2) reading from books
The second one does not provide true practical knowledge.

I suggest you do your own research and verify. Since the words of someone on the internet are worth jack squat. Unfortunately modern day society seems to lack this ability.

But at the same time do know that asking some questions will land people in bad places.
For me it would be better to let the sleeping dogs lie.

Just go listen to Jim Olson, Bush School Professor, talk about his time as a CIA agent and then also his run ins in College Station with his previous career trying to catch back up with him. In his own words, it was taken care of. He usually gives a talk in the MSC about once a year about his stories, and weighs in on current global situations. Colleges are of great importance to intelligence agencies. There is easy cover to get people into the country, have a wealth of knowledge about cutting edge technology as well as easily identify people based on their causes they support.

But regards to churches, there is definitely a fear that any unbecoming involvement in the states will endanger family members still back home.

Ok, fine. Lex Luthor will fire missiles at the dams which will cause mass destruction leading to the death of Lois Lane. This will not go over well with Superman. Superman's ensuing meltdown will result in him flying around the Earth repeatedly to make it spin backwards and travel far enough back in time to prevent this from ever happening. Chinese authorities on Sunday (July 19) blasted a dam on a river in eastern Anhui Province to discharge floodwaters, while the vaunted Three Gorges Dam was hammered with the biggest flood of the year so far.

Communist China's state-run mouthpiece CCTV announced that a dam on the Chuhe River was blown up in order to "alleviate the pressure of flood control" at 2:49 a.m. on Sunday. As waters climbed to historic highs, two successive explosions punctured two holes in the dam in Chuzhou, Quanjiao County, allowing the muddy Chuhe River to pour into flood storage ponds below.

Prior to the blast, the water level at Zhongmiao Station in Chaohu reached 12.83 meters in the morning, surpassing the historic high of 12.80 meters recorded in 1991. A total of 35 rivers and lakes in Anhui alone had reported high water marks exceeding danger levels by noon Saturday (July 18), including the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers, reported China's government-operated Xinhua.

The breaching of the dams is expected to lower the water level of the Chuhe River by 70cm, according to the state-run voicebox Global Times. Deliberately exploding dams and embankments was a tactic used during the massive floods seen in 1998, and it appears that the government is resorting to this practice again as the floodwaters across China this year are already matching or exceeding the levels seen 22 years ago.

Meanwhile, the second major flood of the year was declared on the Yangtze River on Friday (July 17), with the inflow into the Three Gorges Dam reaching 61,000 cubic meters per second by 8 a.m. Saturday. On Sunday evening at 8 p.m., the inflow into the dam dropped by 15,000 cubic meters per second to 46,000.

Xinhua that day then declared that the flood "passed through the Three Gorges Dam smoothly." This was the largest flood to hit the dam so far during this year, with the facility accumulating a total of 14 billion cubic meters of floodwater during this flood season, according to the China Three Gorges Corporation.

And this.

Quote:

Last week, the Three Gorges Dam opened three floodgates as the water level behind it rose more than 50 feet above the flood zone. Another flood crest is expected to arrive at the dam on Tuesday, the AP article states, adding that China's military has been testing the strength of embankments and shoring them up with sandbags and rocks.

Over the weekend, firefighters finished filling in a 620-foot break on Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, that caused flooding into 15 villages, sinking grain crops in Jiangxi province under water.

As of late Sunday, the Huaihe River was overflowing as heavy rain is forecast in the region for the next three days, according to China's Ministry of Emergency Management.

From today to Wednesday, more strong rains will raise flood risks for rivers connecting to Three Gorges, though it seems that the heaviest rains will end by mid-week, saving the world's largest dam from further stress.

Floods are expected to pose a threat to parts of Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces this week, while heavy mountain rains will likely hit parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, according to the AP, though this shouldn't have any impact on the strength of Three Gorges.
The last thing China needs is for that dam to fail. Papering that over would be a bitter pill to swallow for Beijing.

I said there is espionage at the school. To think it didn't exist would be sheer fools folly. I don't think there is much (if any) at the churches. Unless its a Falun Gong sponsored one.

Again, I don't know about the current state of people wishing to attend churches (I'm atheist so I kinda don't go to them...), I just don't think the CCP bothers with those. This isn't Japan making Christians walk on the Jesus. Now, if you're the son of a successful businessperson or party cadre, then they most likely will keep you specifically under surveillance.

Like I said. Most foreign students at A&M aren't either. They are that smart group that made it out via their grades. You can tell who's the son of a cadre member just by the way they speak and act (I know one on campus).

Broke up the posts. Too long for my eyes.

Hawg, if that dam fails. There will likely be no Xi or the CCP.

At the minimum if the dam fails, Xi gets ousted by the more radical pro-American faction immediately, or can't win the NPC re-election.
What's more likely is massive civil unrest like 1989 and maybe civil war.
Other extreme end, CCP collapses.

Remember that:
1) Most Chinese people are superstitious and believe in the will of heaven
2) Massive flooding usually meant that the rulers had lost the right to rule
3) A third to half of the CCP already hates Xi, they just don't say it.
4) Mutually assured destruction is how the CCP doesn't break apart from now. All sins are forgiven, but they are recorded. The anti-corruption mantra in 2015 was "Look in the mirror, wash the dirty spots off your face, put on some new clothes, and don't fall into the mud again."
5) There is a (somewhat strong) rural Chinese neo-communist group that claims the CCP is too capitalist and wants to return to Mao era style.
6) Most people in the cities have no respect for rural folk.

My prediction on a damn failure would most likely be, Xi is ousted, insurgency war (Because this flooding unites both the cities and rural areas). The question is, did Xi fill the military with bootlickers, or capable generals more? The former aren't usually good at leading, the latter are quite insubordinate - think Patton - there's even a phrase in Chinese for that "A general who is away on campaign far away tends not to listen".

Yellow river and Yangtze river floods were bad enough that they would wipe out entire towns and destroy an entire year of crops in the majority of the basin. The construction of the dam was part prestige, part necessity. It lowered the destructive flooding quite a bit actually. Flooding in China is quite common, this year flooding is no surprise. Now, the intensity of the flooding is.
The myth of the first dynasty in China begins with the attempts to curb flooding. The Grand Canal and the Southern water diversion to the North project (I know, doesn't translate well) is an attempt to control flooding.

Grades are just one component of the social credit score for Chinese students. The don't get to study abroad simply based on academic merit no matter how smart they are. Some of them are even smart enough to fool their professors. The recently convicted grad student spies that were photographing Key West naval station got one of their professors to testify on their behalf as a character witness. The prof was certain it was all a misunderstanding based on poor language skills.

For the majority of people to study abroad you need:
1) A decent family income
2) No major **** ups (eg; they caught you or your mediate family with the Falungong)
3) Pretty decent grades

There is a difference between the students who are here based on academic merit, and those who came here on the basis of having money/connections. It is very evident if you look for it.

Grad students are another story, you can tell who's an intelligence asset just by their lifestyle and the way they speak.

After Slamming Western Media "Hype", Chinese Officials Issue Highest Flood Alert As Three Gorges Dam Pushed To Limits

The Huaihe River Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources issued its highest flood alert Monday after the water level on the major river, located between the Yellow and the Yangtze Rivers, reached dangerous levels.

The water level at the Wangjiaba hydrological station on the Huaihe River reached 29.7 meters on Monday, well above the danger level of 27.5 meters.

The 1,000-kilometer river is a major waterway in China, is facing grim flooding risks over the next three days for parts of Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces.

Massive flooding upstream on the Yangtze River has also caused concern that the Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydroelectric power station in the world, is being pushed to the limit under the strain of massive flows of water.
