Radio call-in contests. Dial 6 numbers and hold the 7th, to let it dial when the d.j. said it was time to call.
I lived in a dorm where all the telephone connections were in a small closet at the end of the hallway. Using a couple of alligator clips, you could connect two rooms together. If you called one of the rooms, the phone would ring in both rooms, and an argument would usually ensue about "who called whom".

We would hardwire our dorm phone through our stereo amplifier system, so everyone in the room could listen to these "conversations".

We could also provide feedback to make the phone sound like a radio station dj. We would randomly call girls in the adjoining girls dorm, and inform them that they had "won" some random contest from a local radio station. It was interesting as to how long it would take each girl to realize they were being pranked.
Bunch of aristocrats here with their own phone lines. You are telling me that y'all didn't have to wait to hear one ring or two before answering to determine if it was for you or the house down the street?

I didn't have a party line, actually, but my buddy's grandparents shared one with his great aunt and uncle who lived "down the road". It was a trip when we hung out at their house.
I think my Grandmother had one of the last party lines in Tampa!

We had one when I was a kid. At one point you just picked up the phone and the operator said, "Number, please." and you told her the 4 digit extension you wished to call. Or if you were a dumb kid and didn't know the number you just told her who you wanted to talk to and she'd still connect you 98% of the time.

Bull***** One of the finest Americans and human beings I know (naturalized) is a devout Muslim (does pilgrimage every year). He'd give you the shirt off his back off you needed it. Loves this country and freedom. Better American than many natural-born Americans I know.

Apparently there are some islamic scholars who arent as strict but generally dogs are impure. If sharia law ever takes over here, the hipsters taking their dogs everywhere gonna be mad.

I'm sure you know some very nice Muslims. Many of them are very good, kind and peaceful people and do love America. But Islam as a religion is not compatible with western society. The way they treat their women, celebrations of 911, some that want to push sharia law here in the United States and expect Americans to change their way of life to fit in with theirs when it should be the other way around.

And true not all Muslims are terrorists, but many terrorists are Muslim. Just look at what's going on always in the Middle East even this last round between Israel and Palestine. Look at Hamas and the Taliban for God sakes.

We can argue back-and-forth, but the statement stands.
