I had to argue with my son's teacher because she didn't think he had the capabilities of reading Ready Player One and The Graveyard book


He has been reading several grades above his actual grade for a long time.

I really don't censor books because he never chooses anything I would want to censor. I have told him Heart of Darkness is the worst book I ever read. Did offer to let him watch Apocalypse Now though.

But kids should be challenged. This comic isn't about grooming, but striving for them to expand their reading.

Comes off more as a "know it all" who knows nothing. Sure, challenge kids. At the same time, you don't give them a book they can't read and simply frustrate them.

This is from a parent who's kids always read well above grade level. Daughter was at grade 12 level when she was in 6th grade.

And this is coming from someone who taught novels.

Challenge kids. Let them expand.

I see this as a guy who believes in the power of a novel and a teacher who doesn't want students above what she teaches.

I have experience on both sides of this.

When first reading it, I thought Tanya's cartoon was going to be about gender queer / read banned books / I'm with the banned / etc. in public elementary schools

Although I knew some would see it that way.

Why shouldn't my 11 year old read Frankenstein or the 15 year old H.P. Lovecraft? Kids learn through challenging books and testing their reading abilities.

If they find a genre or an author that spikes their interests, things grow and change.

Kids are tough and resilient. If they choose a book too hard for themselves, they'll just bring it back. And as long as we're relating our kids, my youngest was put into a third grade reading class the second week of kindergarten, and was reading above those kids level.... so there!
