Dan Brown says that his story is based on truth, but it is all based on conjecture. He says that Leonardo Da Vinci was a member of a secret society, and that Leonardo left clues in his paintings and sculptures. These clues point to an amazing thing. Jesus was not divine, the Catholic Church made it all up, and the holy Grail is really the bones of Mary Magdalene.

And it's all a load of crapola...

The Da Vinci Code uses ideas that are considered Heracy by the Christian Church but a summary of the legend....(This is not a summery of the DaVinci Code but some of the ideas that inspired it)

Some people speculate the Holy Grail was not a cup but the Holy Offspring of Mary Magdalene, that when Jesus died she left Jerusalem and had their child named Sarah somewhere in France. This child grew up and helped give rise to a holy line of kings that ruled France called the Merovingian Dynasty.

This secret was held by a pair of secret organizations called the Priory of Sion and the Knights Templar. These groups have used this secret to blackmail and shape European monarchies and the church. Because Mary was so important to the life of Jesus the Church made her into a villian by casting her as a fallen woman and thus keeping the female influence of his teaching suppressed. Such a belief was seen as Satanic and would undermind what the church says about Jesus being Devine for the past 2,000 years.

The Crusaders discovered the secret and used it to build a power base, this most benefited the Knights Templar who grew in power amd influence as a result of this secret. There is a legend of a poor french priest who suddenly became quite wealth. It is speculated he found proof of the churches attempt to supress this story and he was paid off to keep the secret.

I can see how the church would consider such a story the ultimate in Heracy but it is such a great idea and makes for great ficton, at least more interesting then the myth they have been telling people for 2,000 years.

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

And saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 2 Pet. 3:3-4

How interesting that God's Word would predict that people would be saying this very same thing. "It hasn't happened in 2000 years consequently, it is not going to happen" (even though God's Word says it will.

Very interesting. I would not be too dogmatic in that position.

Another stupid thing in the book is that it's now OK to fornicate in group settings in your secret society meetings, because it's really not fornicating, you see, it's really worshipping the "sacred feminine"....

What a great pick up line, huh...

The History Channel had a pretty good show taking measure of Dan Brown's claims. A lot of smart people with no stake in the religious debate debunked a lot of his claims.

If you don't consider such writings heresy, it is a pretty interesting read.

I read about 2/3 of the book and got so sick of hearing "devine feminine" that I just quit reading. It really is a slap in the face of Christianity, and claims that a religion teaching many good things like love and peace is actually conjured up to keep the world held back from some cosmic mythic truth. This book is just a blip that will pass and fade off the radar.

Dan Brown claims that the historical information that underpins the book is true.

From Dan Brown:
quote:
One of the many qualities that makes The Da Vinci Code unique is the factual nature of the story. All the history, artwork, ancient documents, and secret rituals in the novel are accurate-as are the hidden codes revealed in some of Da Vinci's most famous paintings.

So to discount Christians' criticisms of the book solely because Brown's book is, "Just fiction, stupid!" is very simplistic and misleading.

It's a NOVEL people, i.e., fiction...! Nowhere in the book does Brown profess that the story is true! Read it before you judge it!

Dan Brown lies through his teeth about Opus Dei. All Opus Dei is is bringing the faith to your workplace by witnessing, self denial, and doing little things for others. It is not an albino giant who kills people to further their agenda....
