According to polling, a strong majority of the population still identifies as Catholic but actual church attendance has dropped strongly over the last few decades. Presumably, that is what he means.

It's another example of the overall trend of decreasing religiosity in Europe and North America.

Not unlike the Indian boarding schools, the religious men and women failed those people and caused much harm.

I did find, in the story, a silver lining in which one of the men was able to meet his birth mother before she passed away. How that must have been healing for them both, in spite of the problems they both faced.

No they weren't. This was in the 20th century and it was institutional. Also, the Catholic Irish were not innocent of atrocities in their own right.

I disagree with your take on linguistic terms as that's just not an accurate description of how "phobia" is used in English. It does not necessarily refer to a fear. We call molecules repelled by water hydrophobic and I don't think anyone would understand that to mean those molecules feel fear. The meaning is much less specific than you're suggesting.

If this is your definition then Christians should be highly homophobic among many other things our culture stipulates. Of course we have (or should have) an "aversion" to anything contrary to God's law. That question is can someone be homophobic but ln a kind/gentle/loving way.

Antonyms of "aversion" would include affinity, fondness, attraction, and inclination.

Yes, I know that, and any true Christian would not feel hatred toward the homosexual person. Nor should they try to avoid them. Instead they should hate their sin and try to engage and point them toward Christ. It's the sin we hate and avoid, not the person.

To be honest, I skimmed this post and comments, not really interested in engaging in the original subject matter, but couldn't help myself in commenting about phobias. Probably wasn't appropriate upon further review.

I'm sure there are people out there who actually hate the person; but they aren't a true member of God's family in that case.

I am sympathetic to many of the concerns about mass migration, culture clash, etc. I think these concerns get labeled as bigoted and racist when language chosen to describe them equates these human beings to a plague of insects.

kurt vonnegut - Unfortunately that description is relatively accurate. I wish it wasn't. We have a recent example in this country (Somalians). Which state that has taken in a significant number of them has truly been made better by that migration? Now compare that to Asians as a whole.

sapper - And centuries of history prove my point. Just in the last 25 years we have the UK rape gangs.

There's some hard truths that Western Civilization needs to come to terms with. If we don't, we're sunk.
1 - Some cultures are just simply inferior and just not compatible with Western values.
2 - These inferior cultures have shown over the centuries that they don't assimilate like other groups.
3 - There's a reason muslim countries don't take in their own refugees.
