"He's God. I'm created." I liked that! I think it's our human arrogance in forgetting "our place" that causes a lot of our problems…

Agree. And when you realize that, then you realize you are His adopted child and loved unconditionally.

And this has been my experience. 10andbounce is an exception.

This has been my experience, sadly. It actually caused us to write off a church that we really liked for various reasons/ministries that we agreed with, and there were some people who really helped us in the early days of our move here. But when meeting the pastor and discussing our testimonies and how we were raised, some comments were made (in reference to how this church's view of God was better due to being Reformed) that were just shy of being rude. This same attitude also appeared at the pulpit, to the point where my wife and I had to say "this isn't it". We're not bitter or angry, maybe disappointed, but what can you do.

Ironically, we have ended up at the first church we visited, and the only reason we visited in the first place was because we were running late and weren't going to make it to the one we had planned on. I just happened to have driven by it the day before, so figured "why not?"

Hey I appreciate that.

I will look back on the link later when I have some time. I do understand what some of you all are getting at, though.

Remember, semper reformanda: "always reforming." To be truly reformed is to be in a constant state of humbly submitting what you think the text says before the text itself since the textnot your, or your favorite Reformed preacher's, understanding of the textis inspired and authoritative.

Amen.

I am likely not helpful with unpacking the perceived arrogance that may stem from the Reformed churches that some may have experienced. I've only been associated with 1 church and that something I haven't encountered. To be arrogant in a reformed church is truly the antithesis of how it should be; with the importance of man's wicked nature and us being incapable of doing good without the Lord's work first, you're really missing the mark if you think you're better than someone else.

I am also not surprised at the sentiment either; I do 100% identify with the idea of this second conversion as someone may have new found understanding towards the doctrines of Grace. I think that some of it is a passion or zeal for God's word and our duty to protect the truths that it holds. This isn't a choose your own adventure kind of religion, so the reformed faith has a sense of unwavering commitment, often bounded by the confessions they adhere to. There is likely a lack of tolerance towards dissenting views if you're considering joining a reformed church. I think all of these things can come off and play as arrogance. I also think there likely are arrogant reformed church people, perhaps tied to this second conversion theory and having a feeling of being more favored by God - just thinking out loud.

I personally may have a bit of an advantage just because this is not how I was raised. I have two parents that were raised catholic, I grew up in a non-denominational Bible church, have served as an Elder in a previous church, and I am now part of a reformed church.

Good post.

"There is likely a lack of tolerance towards dissenting views if you're considering joining a reformed church".

I think that statement accurately describes the crux of the issue. And I find that to be in direct contradiction to traditional Baptist beliefs of the autonomy of each church and the priesthood of the believer.

The Baptist church I grew up in encouraged independent, individual thinking.

Kind of funny timing; going through RC's "Predestination" series and right after my post got into this lecture, which I highly recommend as it relates to Romans 9. I probably gravitate towards RC more than anyone just because of the warmth he brings to the pulpit.

From the 6:55 mark until 8:45 or so, RC addresses this very concept of arrogance and rejects it completely. So if you are a reformed believer who is arrogant about it, you are surely in error.

Agree with you on Sproul as he is by far my favorite Reformed theologian.

And he does seem warmer than the others. Maybe because he was not Reformed at the beginning of his ministry and later changed his belief system?
