I am noticing a trend where disaffiliating UMC churches choose to remain independent. I can see their reluctance to join a denomination given the extremely top heavy bureaucracy of the United Methodists.

I have seen several disaffiliated UMC churches change their name to something with no mention of "Methodist"

What are they now? Non-denominational?

Actually my observation is somewhat similar: the "Methodist" label may be a bit toxic right now after the decades long fights but then again, I have seen disaffiliated independent churches retain the Methodist label, particularly in areas that do have a strong Methodist witness.

The UMC church here in my town in central Florida disaffiliated and joined the GMC, but they have no mention of "Methodist" in their name. They are now Living Hope Church.

However, the school they operate (where my wife works and my daughter attends) is called Wesley Christian Academy, so there is still a Methodist connection for those who know.

There has to be some crossover between disaffected, independent methodist churches (now nondenominational) and disaffected, independent baptist churches (now nondenominational).

At some point in the future, the only difference will only be that methodist will say hi to each other in the liquor store.

Looking forward to that making it on a statement of faith webpage under 'about us'.
