Just got an e-mail that Our Mother of Sorrows was desecrated last night. Two men broke into the church and got into the tabernacle and violated the Blessed Sacrament.

Just disgusting and despicable.

For us non-Catholics, could you provide more detail of what that means? I take it they broke into where the communion bread and wine is stored and drank the wine that had already been blessed?

Only consecrated hosts are kept in the tabernacle.

A consecrated host is bread that been through the process of transubstantiation. From the Catholic point of view, a view I share, that bread has become the physical presence of Christs body. As such, what they did to the Eucharist in the tabernacle, they did to Christ.

Father forgive them; they know not what they do

I am certain these will be desecrated at some black mass, there is no greater crime.

There shouldn't be any left after communion at mass. That is why you always see the priest eat the remaining hosts and drink the remaining wine.

I was raised Catholic, however, I haven't been to mass in over a decade so maybe things have changed.

Simply not true.

Any unused consecrated wine is consumed by the priest or Eucharist ministers but consecrated hosts are placed in the Tabernacle and this is not some recent change.

Interesting and good to know. Swear I used to see the priest eating them during mass, maybe just bad memory on my part.

If Mass was at a place that lacked a tabernacle or other subtable place, the hosts and wine will be consumed.

I've had to help at a Mass at a convention center.

I have also seen a Priest consume several hosts if there are only a few remaining, rather than return them to the tabernacle
