We've survived a bad pope before. We'll do it again.

"Everyone, everyone, everyone, are called to live in the church," he told the Jesuits. "Never forget that."

ETA: I thought this part of the interview was funny...

During the meeting, a Portuguese Jesuit told Francis that he had suffered during a recent sabbatical year in the United States because he came across many Catholics, including some US bishops, who criticized Francis' 10-year papacy as well as today's Jesuits.

This pope has called for the ending of the death penalty (leftwing position) when the death penalty was instituted by God Himself before the Law was ever instituted, which means the death penalty is an eternal edict and not something that can be abrogated by mere man.

This pope has railed against free market capitalism (leftwing position) even though there is no better tool to pull man out of poverty. The pope talks out of both sides of his mouth on this issue, but overall he wants government to have a larger role than it has.

This pope says that having nuclear weapons is immoral (leftwing position). This is such a nave position I have contempt for anyone that holds such a view.

This pope has taken leftwing position on climate change, and has called for mankind to ditch fossil fuels. This position alone would lead to massive human death totals and a marked increase in human poverty.

Yes this pope is a leftist and has chosen his Leftism over Christ.

I've inferred that Pope Francis has conflated most/all American Catholics that prefer and want to continue celebrating the TLM with the vocal subset of TLM fans that also believe all manner of other more exotic/hostile positions. That seems unfair to the extent that it is true. The whole Vatican II/"Spirit of Vatican II" rejection dynamic is there, but we're getting on 60 years since that was kicked off to address a problem that we can't really get our heads around anymore, to the extent it is even considered at all.

What little I'm exposed to on the issue seems to acknowledge submission to the Pope while disagreeing with his conclusions on the TLM as often and to the furthest extent possible. I'm sympathetic to the TLM adherents and find their arguments very persuasive, but being a Roman Catholic means that you listen to the Pope. If he says that one particular liturgy is not preferred, then you shouldn't want to prefer it, seek it out, develop rational defenses of it, or otherwise support it any more than anything else the Magesterium tells you not to think or do.

Leaving your own preferences simmering on the back burner while hoping to see if the next guy will re-adopt the policies of the last guy (or the guy from the 1950's, 1850's, or 950's) seems disingenuous however supportable that hope may be historically.

I love how the Jesuits absolutely cannot let a single instance go by without trying to interject homosexuality into the equation. They have become a single-issue breakaway sect.

Every time they're called on for a question it has something to do with massaging church teaching into something more homosexual.

With regards to what the Holy Father says, you have to dig deep to find kernels of wisdom. He is right that for some people the Republican Party and owning the libs has become a substitute for their Catholicism.

I consider myself both religiously and politically Catholic. I disagree with immigration, and disagree with using immigrants as pawns to own blue city mayors. I am anti abortion, anti euthanasia and anti-death penalty except in a shrinking number of situations. I think we practice hypocrisy when we tolerate or turn a blind eye to adultery and fornication among straight couples, but not among homosexuals. I do think there needs to be discussion about gun control, but the liberals would not like my suggestion as it would impact almost entirely one of their voting blocs who commit all the gun crime.

So, I see where the Holy Father is coming from, even if I think he exaggerates the problem. Your Catholicism should influence your political beliefs, the reverse should never be true.

You cannot view the Catholic Church through a political lens, we are against the death penalty almost always as ever person regardless how deserves a chance to repent and has a soul. We are no longer in the Old Testament, snd everyone has a chance at repentance and eternal life.

Free market capitalism is neither left or right wing, it just is. It typically is considered right wing due to the far left wing insistence on Communism. The Church is against labor when marxism would destroy private property. It is similarly against capitalism when profits are prioritized over a just wage for the workers.

I seem both virulently right wing and left wing at times by my friends and family, because the wings themself mean nothing. I follow the Body of Christ; not Marx, not Adam Smith, not Hayek not Keynes, and not Friedman.

The death penalty isn't because of the Old Testament. It was instituted as an eternal covenant between God and man. A covenant that has not and will never be canceled.

Should we then institute the death penalty for the same crimes as in the OT? Should it be performed by lapidation?

You can't conflate the Law with the Noahic Covenant. One is still fully binding the other isn't.

Depends on which covenant it was included as part of; the Noahide covenant would lead you to believe you can righteously kill a murderer, yet Mosaic law allows it for striking a parent, oppressing the poor and delinquency. God himself chose not to execute Cain for the killing of Abel, and warned others against killing him in revenge. Christ personally intervened in the stoning of the adulteress, and God has said verbatim "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay"

I am very comfortable with God deciding who can be executed, politicians not so much.

Again; the state has the power of the sword I understand that, but that does not mandate its usage

Counterpoint on the chance at repentance... A due date, so to speak, can and just might be that impulse to repent. Not having that due date... Procrastination can happen until it's too late. I can see it both ways, and I also recognize that it's a one-size-fits-all situation regarding human behavior.

It could just be a personal failing, most of my feelings regarding the death penalty come from the teachings of the last several popes, and the fact that I very much like the death penalty as it is expert level schadenfreude, but that's not a holy mindset.

Turn the clock back 80 years and you have Pope St Pius X and Pope Ven Pius XII explicitly supporting the usage of the death penalty.

I'm a cradle Catholic who turned away from the church about ten years ago. Maybe fifteen. Never joined another church, just nursed my grudge at my church and didn't attend. (Son was an altar boy for a pedo priest. He wasn't assaulted, but only by the Grace of God.)

Had a visit from the Holy Spirit while cleaning out my closet the end of last year and started listening to Fr Mike Schmidt's Bible in a Year podcast every morning. (Highly recommend.) Returned to church during Lent and just managed to drag myself to confession this past Saturday. I am a new woman. Drive an hour to attend what my son calls a Catholic heavy parish. It's rural so I guess they get away with it. I feel at home and God is back in my life. Appreciate that the first thing the priest said during my confession was Welcome Back.

I'm a little worried about what might be coming from this synod. I will have to make my peace with changes the synod brings. That said, I doubt too many changes will find their way to my little rural church.

I heard a stat once (need to find the study) that said people are far more likely to repent, or have an act contrition even if imperfect, on death row vs life imprisonment.

It's ironic from my perspective because the Pope is a reactionary in the sense that I think he is the one resistant to change, a reactionary in the true sense of the word.

I've lived my whole life in a post-Vatican II Church where mass attendance has declined sharply, and the number of people who believe Church teaching as a percentage of people who are nominally Catholic has been decimated. That's the Church I was formed in. One of liturgical abuse and Gather hymnals and orans posture holding hands during the Lord's prayer. I never knew anything different. Who of us is asking for substantive changes, and who is pining for the old days here?

I don't know if it's mean spirited or what, but he comes across as thin skinned and passive aggressive. It's exhausting. He only seems to be able to muster empathy for people whose opinions his align well with. I guess everyone, everyone, everyone doesn't mean EVERYONE, does it?

I don't believe that is original to the Bible. Most Bibles say it was added later. (At least mine does). If it happened then Jesus is perfectly just in anything he does and his purpose for coming was to fulfill the law. However, the death penalty wasn't part of the Law of Moses. It predates him to the Noahic covenant.

You'll have to give some points of reference. I'm 37. My kids think I'm ancient. Young-ish? My first exposure to the Latin Mass was at a monastery when I was in the Navy. Would have been roughly 2008 or 09 I think.

I've always wondered, how do the 26 autocephalous churches that make up the eastern Catholic Churches manage to get by without the Novus Ordo mass and the massive rainbow propaganda machine?

Progressivism is completely overlooking them, why? Because it's not about the mass, it's not about the liturgy, it's not about throwing open the doors of the Church, it's about infiltration and sabotage. The eastern Catholic Churches don't give the huge PR victories that striking right at the heart of Rome do.

There's no problem with the Liturgy of St.John Chrysostom for the Byzantines or the Liturgy of St Mark for the Coptic Catholics, but the traditional Latin mass for the Roman Catholics? Anathema sit

It's because almost all of our scriptural manuscripts actually come from lectionaries. It was in the lectionaries but not clearly part of any particular gospel. Different later scriptures have it in different books based on where it sat in the cycle of readings in the lectionary. However make no mistake it absolutely is scripture, having been read aloud in the churches as scripture from ancient times. The pericope adulterae is known back as early as the fourth century and that makes it older than the concept of "the Bible".
