Dreams played an important role in the ancient temples of Yahweh and to the biblical authors. Just as many scholars who dismissed dreams as nothing more than vanity based upon Zech 10:2 said that dreams were from God. For example, many scholars flatly stated that dreams were weak prophecies. According to Abbayye (ca. 338) there were at least twenty-four dream interpreters in Jerusalem. The teachers knew Numbers 12:6: And he said "Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord (Yahweh) will make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.".

How do Christians in the post-modern church reconcile these aspects of the OT with the post-modern church's flat ignorance of dreams?

It's possible someone could have a profound dream with a message…but most of the time dreams are completely innocuous and time spent trying to analyze them is wasted. I have nightmares if I eat too much of certain foods. There's nothing more to it. Again a divine message could happen but dissecting every dream doesn't seem to be the best use of the gifts God gives us. There are so many more ways he reveals himself to us

Do you have an legitimate reconciliation of the plain text of the OT (Numbers 12:6) with the general concepts of "inspiration" that the post-modern church generally uses as a blanket statement for seemingly whatever means will achieve its end goal? I have some ideas on this...

Christians should expect God to speak through dreams about as frequently as through prophets and seers.

Right. Seems possible the food is unclean and therefore the dreams are coming from demons.

I had a prophetic dream once.

Actually, my wife and I had a prophetic dream together.

I had a dream that wife was visited by an angel at a school field trip. Same night, wife had a dream that an event I was trading around was going to wind up a certain way on a certain day.

I told four people about the dreams before the fateful day.

The prophesy came true.

But, most of my dreams are about Jennifer Connley, winning the lottery, and flying like superman. None of those did.

I think that if God is going to speak to you in a dream, you will know it.

You bet. If I go all in on a big steak...I will definitely have either nightmares or bizarre dreams. I think its the head gut connection. My gut gets angry with me.

Melatonin supplements sometimes give me weird dreams.

That's so weird and cool. Humans are ridiculous animals.

I see no reason God couldn't or wouldn't speak through dreams. Many cultures, and myself included, find it easier to believe the possibility of dreams being an avenue to communicate with the spirit world. It's far easier to believe that than some of the extraordinary stuff you read in the Bible. It all seems about having equal chances of being true in my opinion.

When I dipped snuff my recurring dream was that all my teeth were falling out. I think it was due to how dry my mouth was.

The dream stories that I hear about these days are usually missionary stories or mission related. Many from Islamic countries in which the person has a dream of Jesus and then has a clear dream about what the missionary looks like and sees them the next day or week in the market and is introduced to the gospel and believes.
