In Columbus Georgia for a wedding and walking Main Street. About ten folks saying repent and turn to Christ. They had the signs like everybody is going to hell and listed every sin they considered hell worthy.

Told them I had and knew the Lord and they did not like that. It was like you have not really repented, etc.

It was weird. And the ironic thing is I was with the wedding party all of whom are devout Christian. Guess that is not good enough for these folks.

I do not see how that brings anyone to Christ. It is like they are doing it for themselves.

They're tards, for the most part, but absolutely nothing new.

Reductionism has lead many to this sort of fundamentalism, be it in the sciences, economics, or even religion.

Christ was a street preacher. And all of his apostles.

Actually most of the time they were in the synagogues. Christ spoke to gatherings for his most famous sermons. Paul was at Mars Hill.

Peter did "street preach" at Pentecost.

I want everyone to come to know Christ and if street preaching does it, all for it. I do not even mind the "turn or burn" if it is effective.

What I do not understand is the reaction to me saying I knew Christ and had repented. And I was with a wedding party composed of young Christians in their 20-30s and they were really turned off by it.

Nobody in our party was drunk, yelling, doing anything except walking down the street. In fact, the whole street was people like us. Just seemed weird.

Now there was a lot of ministering, healing, etc.on the streets. Do not remember Jesus or the apostles screaming at people they were going to hell.

Or the church fathers or early Christians doing that.

This sort of thing is counterproductive in my opinion and makes Christians look like wack jobs which drives people away. The fact they wouldn't accept that you were a believer shows they are out there for attention.

Dude the groom had just been baptized and the whole wedding party had just given their testimonies at the reception.

These were Army and Marine guys. And then you have these folks telling them they are all going to hell.

You're right. It was never recorded that they screamed it.

And Paul never mentioned hell. The greatest evangelist in history never mentioned hell. No turn or burn. And preached to pagan Gentiles.

Pretty good article on this with actual Biblical references.

It doesn't. They are proselytizing not evangelizing. I really think that often, its more about them feeling like they are in a very small minority of the truly saved and everyone else is not. I don't get a sense that their motivating factor is love of others and bringing them to Christ, but rather it makes them feel better about themselves. Kind of like Scientologists...they are the only ones who can save the world.

Sounds like the Biblical form of street preaching according to this article is to set up a "change my mind" booth.

That would be fine with me. And that is what repentance actually means. A change of mind.

I was tempted when they kept saying repent if they knew what the word meant.

Actually it says thrown into the fire. I believe that "fire" is purifying. Yes there is punishment, much like a loving human father gives, but there is still love which God is.

Since I gave up worrying about what others are doing and concentrating on myself and my relationship with God I'm in a much better place. Trying to be a bright light in a dark world I think has a bigger effect on cracking the door to Jesus to non-believers or those unsure than anything else..imho..

Very weird and often deranged people from cults. Feel bad for the normal ones who might be new to the scene that get suckered in. Unfortunate side effect of Protestantism.

Did they have any websites on their banners or tracts? (if they were passing any out)

Not that I saw. They had black larger cards they held and then business card size ones they handed out. The message was turn or burn.

On the political board, I get accused frequently of being a troll. I believe that I am communicating my frustration at being an old school conservative who doesn't recognize today's Shock First, Policy Second Repub Party. I feel the same about my faith. I want to write a book titled The Hijacking of Jesus with the idea being that many of us are more drawn to be like the very Pharasees that Jesus fought against relative to legalism and judgement.

I mean it sincerely when I say that your post is spot on. Thank you for speaking the truth. Getting ourselves right and loving God and then loving others should be our priority.
