Has anyone seen this on Amazon Prime?

The doc primarily focuses on the Duggar family, but it also goes extensively into the world of IBLP and how the Duggars are/were intertwined.

I was completely ignorant to anything IBLP related and I had never heard of it before but it's pretty stunning what some of their curriculum includes.

I've followed Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo somewhat on social media and she wrote a book on how she began to deal with that part of her life.

She did an interview on Issues, Etc a couple months ago that's a pretty good primer on that whole mess.

Using a distorted Gospel to control and harm the vulnerable makes me angry.

My father in law is a huge Bill Gothard guy and paid for us and our kids to go to a BLP conference.

It was completely foreign to the loving faith I grew up with and drove me away from Christianity for years. Fortunately I had an encounter with the Lord and regained my faith.

You would think folks like this would realize they will have to give an account before the Lord.

My encounter with the Lord was not a physical or verbal appearance, but in the form of a human Angel that he sent back from vacation to help my daughter when she was critically ill. I knew God had sent this person back. My daughter began to rapidly improve with their appearance.

I admit I would love to believe this kind if thing, but my faith is too weak. I'm glad if yall do, though.

And if you want to entertain a little philosophical aside, what would you say to a parent in a similar situation who lost their child? Did the Lord not want to save that critically ill child as well?

Not trying for gotcha. Just asking questions.

I have been down that rabbit hole and it was not a good place to be in.

I try to have my mind focus on three things, God is good, as revealed through Jesus, He is in control, and I do not understand His ways.

My job is to love and trust and obey.

And as an add on comment, when you become firmly convinced there is eternal life it changes everything.

Unfortunately sometimes people use scripture as justification to harm others. Even if it didn't start that way or began with good intentions. But the fact that they clearly went beyond biblical teachings and looked solely to their leader for interpretation should have been a red flag to a number of followers.

Thankfully, most of their children seemed to be able to parse out the bad and continue to follow Christ.

The Duggars are low hanging fruit. I perceived a lot of gratuitous "dunking" on homeschooling and where the series might have exaggerated correlatives with aspects of their family that aren't bad in and of themselves.

One part that sticks out in my mind was when the journalist I think it was, invoked slavery in his reasoning about why the patriarchal/submissive christian wife/lots of kids model is bad. Can't remember exactly what he said. Something along those lines.

They weren't dunking on homeschooling so much as the worthless curriculum that didn't educate the kids.

I think most would agree, though, that the submission they were teaching was not what scripture teaches. Submission doesn't mean overlooking the husbands decisions to minimize or cover up abuses. Basically they took what the Bible teaches and turned it up to 11.
The Duggars made themselves easy targets, but I think for anyone that watched it, it was the revelations about the IBLP that were most enlightening.

Gothard used terror and fear of God's wrath to gain control. As I said, I have been down this very dark road and encountered Jesus who is totally different than what Gothard preaches.

And I firmly believe this distorted theology drives people away from the true Gospel.

I also discovered that the church and Christians are nothing like these cults.

I understand the hurt that that particular "church" has produced in the victims but when they went on a tirade that social media is now being used by Christians they somehow made it sound as if any Christian influencer promoting biblical values is somehow a "fundamentalist" looney promoting the same things as the ILBP.

I saw that and thought "annnnnnd there it is".

They're fundamentalists. They had footage of an IBLP conference (which I guess was the curriculum they taught) where a family volunteered their child to be spanked on stage as a demonstration (the guy went through the motions but did not actually spank the child, but it was super weird).

They also described something called blanket time, where they would pick out a toy for a baby, and then punish the baby for trying to play with the toy. This was something mothers did with their children.

There were things about how boys courted girls they said resemble arranged marriage. They weren't allowed to kiss before they were married. I think there was a girl on the doc that said she basically had no idea what sex was until her wedding night, and that she was raped multiple times on her wedding night.

The women weren't allowed to use tampons.

They likened the treatment of women in their households to a handmaid's tale.

Here's my one rant.

I'm not in the least bit defending the Duggars family, but I hate that their response to a "Christian" group is to bring on clearly anti-christian individuals.

This was no different than the newer Hillsong on Hulu.

From watching part of the first episode:

We have:

1. A transgender (maybe) person(?) who runs the Duggarsnark which is designed to bash the show.
2. Danielle Lindemann whose wikipedia page says she is: is an American author, sociologist and an associate professor of Sociology at Lehigh University. She is author of Dominatrix: Gender, Eroticism, and Control in the Dungeon (University of Chicago Press, 2012), Commuter Spouses: New Families in a Changing World (Cornell University Press, 2019), and True Story: What Reality TV Says about Us (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2022). She has also written for CNN, Newsweek, Salon, Fortune, and Quartz

3. A third woman who was a gender studies professor.

It really seems that the reason for the documentary is to bash Christianity, not just the duggars.
