I think there is a tendency to conflate oil and gas with chemical processing - but in fairness they share a common root. How do you have modern society without petrochemicals? Or do you only mean oil and gas as a primary energy source?

We will need oil and gas for a long time. But we have to move away from it as a primary source of energy. Big oil knew the dangers of climate change in the 80s and has been maliciously gaslighting the public since.

This is an ignorant position. Even if one accepts the premise that anthropogenic climate change is an existential threat, the ability to eschew the use of fossil fuels as a primary energy source isn't a reality today, much less forty years ago. It's like trading immediate starvation for a proposed famine in a century or more - except that's probably close to an actual possibility in the example.

I'm aware of the difficulties. That doesn't mean we don't need to work at transitioning as quickly as possible.

The climate has been changing since creation. God is in control. To think man can cause climate change is crazy imho.

Really? Crazy? How many species have we wiped out? How many changes have we made to the planet? Can you find a similar period in the past where global temperatures changed this rapidly?

That's a bold statement to make with about a century of data Greta.

There were two miles of ice on top of what are now major cities ~21,000 years ago.

~12,000 years ago, the average temp increased by 13*F in a few years/decades.

~90 years ago, a years long drought wiped out a large swath of cropland in the US plains states.

Even if I stipulate that the AGW model predictions are correct, against the record of geologic history, the production of CO2 via burning of hydrocarbons doesn't strike me as an existential threat to the livability of the planet as much as a crucial mitigating advantage that humanity might have at its disposal when it must respond to the far more harsh natural climatic change that will eventually come our way.

The richest man in the world got that way because of the response to the "climate crisis", and his work has done jack squat to reduce CO2. The motivations of the O&G industry are right there for everyone to see, but there is an ecosystem of people heavily invested in pushing money from productive pursuits into their own pockets behind the smokescreen of "saving the planet".

"God controls the climate" seems like a "god of the gaps" argument that is on its last legs.

This thread is more ridiculous than normal for this board.

Granted it isn't as bad as the 16chan thread on "hey lib, why isn't the ozone hole and acid rain a problem any more? Back before we banned CFCs and required exhaust scrubbing, libs told us these were going to be huge problems. So what happened? Why don't we hear about them any more?"

A world mandate (excluding China and Russia) to eliminate hydrocarbon based energy, not just the USA. Oil Capital funds are dying up, car manufacturers have pledged to be all electric in 10 years, Shell, BP, and Marathon shutting down refineries this year. It is about to get real crazy and yet we are at point where it can't be stopped. Much like the mandated vaccinations, C19 has ran its course but our insanity has just started.

Never seen anything like it, obviously doesn't matter which side is in charge. Inflation is about to rip a new one around the world, a loaf of bread for a day's wage type stuff coming?

Floating islands of plastic choking out sea life and yet we are forced on nonsense.

How dare you!

I see the point u r trying to make but unfortunately we are not cleaning of the current mess and the concentration of effort by the environmentalist is directed toward air pollution or global warming. Simple solution is to tighten controls on liter. The third world countries and ships are the root cause of these islands of trash. I have seen first hand the filth from the islands of the Netherlands to west Africa dumping into the seas. The USA is doing a decent job of controlling its trash, other countries need their feet held to the fire. We continue to chase invisible particles in the air rather than massive dumps in the seas.
Bio Plastic production is not a solution. Cleaning up after yourself is.

I agree that pollution is a huge issue, also. I just don't think one should be such a higher priority than the other. Both have to be tackled equally, and I get your point. Not enough attention to pollution but that doesn't mean you stop the other.

There are reports of Euphrates losing substantial water levels and record droughts in the region ( data is probably not the most reliable) but this is interesting.

Disclaimer: I don't know historically how significant this drought is obviously probably no one does but the locals are saying it's significant so I find it interesting.

This thread quickly turned political, as it seems happens more frequently. It's like some can't help but turn it into a libs vs conservatives discussion the minute any of the topics of the current political zeitgeist get mentioned. Still, it's better than any rando thread started by Cody…err…I mean Oldmaninterrupted
