Ash Wednesday tomorrow and thus begins Lent for the Western Church, so . . .

Bring on the Velveeta Jelly Omelet and the Tuna Fritters with Cheese Sauce!

Don't pass over the update or you'll miss true Penance!

Acknowledging in advance all you heathens who will be enjoying a big juicy steak, burger, etc, etc, . . .

Pfft, only lightweights eat cheese, eggs, and fish during the Great Fast.

You need to get on the beans and rice train, and don't forget the old staple pasta with clam sauce.

Seriously, though -- there are some actually good (not just fast-good) recipes out there. I use Chloe's Kitchen for several recipes, like roasted tomato soup and avocado pesto pasta. Her fasting banana nut muffin recipe is almost as good as my mom's (don't tell her I said that).

Catherine Mandell's When You Fast is also worth buying.

Heck, last year I even made a solid fasting bouillabaisse-style seafood stew.

Don't you know that the entire purpose of Lent is just NOT TO EAT MEAT? You can have cheeze pizza; lobster, crab, shrimp, cheese fries and crawfish until you die from iodine posioning, as long as you don't eat meat.

Another reason why I'm Baptist. Lent is a nice idea about self-discipline, but there's nothing in the Bible to support it.

I was brought up an Episcopalian and that's really confusing. You don't have the full playbook for doing Lent, but you eat fish on Friday. My Mom would get nutzoid about Good Friday. Didn't want me to watch TV because we were in "mourning" [pretending that you don't know about Easter morning] so by the time I was in junior high I'd spend most of that Friday at a friend's house watching TV or going to movies or whatever. By the time Saturday came around my Dad and/or I would have done something new to tick her off, so she'd be off on another tangent and Lent would have been forgotten.

The bead rattlers and Byzantines are rolling their eyes but you're right of course. It's just a silly tradition ordained by men.

It's not the observation that is annoying, its the arbitrary application of the "it's not in the bible" standard.

Lots of things baptists do aren't in the bible, including what is and isn't "in the bible", the principal of sola scriptura, electric guitars and praise and worship music, altar calls, etc etc etc

Yawn. Suggestions for Lent that also won't be found in the bible:
