Unschool - like homeschooling but without a curriculum.

Currently kiddos are 2 years old and the other 2 month old.

When appropriate it will be private Catholic.

Florida. And, as jkag mentions, we are both quite fond of Don Bosco. Mrs. 747 greatly appreciates his methods while I choose him to be my confirmation saint many years ago.

How do they make friends, if you dont me asking. Club sports? Do you plan on sending them to a school at any age?

Kids meet peers/friends by a number of avenues:
  • kids of families met in church groups/organizations
  • neighbors
  • Cub/Boy Scouts
  • American Heritage Girls
  • home school co-op
  • other activities associated with the co-op
  • we've done sports before, but that gave way to Scouting
  • girls have done choir

Public, and a little Home School. Our public schools have done a good job of character education, and my children have generally found good peer groups and teachers to be around. Although I do not pressure my children academically, I recognize that several of them possess a natural academic bent that will probably not allow them to be happy in life if they do not pursue academically-minded paths. This will require degree/s from good universities, which will require paying attention to studies in high school, etc. My difficulty is finding a compromise between the laid back church/homeschool culture that doesn't care about grades and the uptight, helicopter parent culture that cares only about grades. I don't want my children to be obsessed automatons who can ace standardized tests yet have no thinking skills. Nor do I want them to be carefree homeschoolers who can't get into a big time university because they got stuck in the counterculture.

I have no idea what I would do if I had kids.

I had a really bad experience in private christian school and an excellent public school experience..but I can't deny that I would love to send my hypothetical children to get a classical education like my church and Lutheran High North offers.

I suppose that's a problem for a different day..but I definitely would not send my kids to a christian school that isn't the same denomination as mine.

If you ever find yourself living in Waco, Live Oak has been given high marks from friends and acquaintances transcending denominational boundaries. Had we stayed in Waco and wanted to enroll our kids in a school, we would have opted for Live Oak.

I grew up there. I hope never to live there again. However, if I did, I would be sending my kids to Midway high school. If nothing else, so I could live vicariously through them being on the swim/water polo team with my old coach and one of my teammates who became an assistant coach. Midway is a pretty excellent public school all around.

In Houston, it would be Memorial Lutheran School. From what I understand, some of the ITL schools are looking to come together to form a highschool ITL.

If it wasn't for us moving, I'd be sending my daughter to the classical school I formally taught at.

public.

will move to public charter school in the next year or two when it opens. Or to the private christian school once kids are in middle school. Our city is poor and after elementary school, the rest are crap and barely meeting standards.

Strong supporter of public school for both our kids (Brenham) and our grandchildren (College Station). While attending school they have encountered a certain number of jerks, dopers, superficial people, slackers, etc. Well, well, well. They will encounter these people in the workplace, too. This way it doesn't come as a surprise to them.

But I cannot tell a lie. If we lived somewhere like Hearne or Snook or Hempstead where the schools are in constant turmoil and are always one step removed from being taken over by Texas Education Agency it would be a whole different story.

My kids are grown. They, like rambling Ag's kids, attended a public school in a rural area. There are/were less than 700 students enrolled in grades K-12. Many of the staff who are employed by the school district are conservative Christians. I served on the school board for 16 years and my wife was without doubt the hardest working volunteer connected to the school. She still does a great deal for the school even though our kids graduated in 2008 and earlier.

It seems to me that public education drifts further away from conservative values on a continuing basis. It's our duty as parents to be involved and make as much of an impact as we can on the school our children attend.

Private school was not an option for us. The closest one was 70 miles away. We felt intimidated by the thought of home schooling, however, the majority of people I personally know, who are home schooling, seem to be doing a great job.

Trust me, as a parent that homeschools their children, they don't need to be in a school building to encounter all types of people. In fact, at least with our kids, I've found that they learn better how to engage with all types because they aren't restricted by the highly regulated school environment.

Not old enough yet, but will likely start out at the charter school in our town. After that I think it will largely depend on the child based on her interests and desires and what we believe will be the best environment for her.
