Consecrated virgin, 38, marries God in wedding ceremony that attracts hundreds
quote:
You have probably heard of the groom's name - Jesus Christ. But you are unlikely to have heard of his bride - Indiana high school teacher Jessica Hayes.
The 38-year-old joined an elite band of 'consecrated virgins' when she 'got married' to the son of God in downtown Fort Wayne at the weekend.
The consecrated virgins are similar to nuns in that they live chaste lives. But they do not live in convents and they are not obliged to take on any particular work for the Catholic Church. However, most volunteer for their local diocese or Church associations.
Hayes, who is a theology teacher at Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne, said she decided to become a consecrated virgin after years of prayer and soul-searching.
quote:
Like most brides, Hayes spent a long time worrying about what dress to wear.

Since she would have to lie prostrate on the church's floor at one point, she figured a long conservative dress would fit the bill.
'I've seen so many wedding dresses over the years that I think I've probably changed my mind very many times,' she told WANE. 'I had to really consider the appropriateness of the occasion for my dress.
'I wanted my shoulders to be covered, and I would have to lie prostrate before the altar, so I really wanted to make sure that I was well-covered in a way that still shows the beauty of a bride.'

Most people would be considered insane if they tried to hold a large ceremony to marry their imaginary friend.

At least we can be fairly certain she won't be having any children of her own. I imagine her "theology class" is the absolute definition of indoctrination.

For those curious about this calling (which is still somewhat rare and mysterious to people), there is a United States Association of Consecrated Virgins, which offers this:
quote:
The consecrated virgin lives in full communion with the Church through her spiritual bond with her Bishop, the representative of Jesus Christ in her diocese; and she shares in the concerns of her diocese through their on-going communication. The consecrated virgin is responsible to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. She receives the sacraments regularly and is faithful to private prayer. She keeps as a special focus of her prayer the intentions of her Bishop and clergy and the needs of her diocese. Consecrated virginity is a distinct form of consecrated life in the Church. Therefore, while it is related to other forms of consecrated life, it is not identical to any of them. The consecrated virgin living in the world, as expressed in Canon 604, is irrevocably "consecrated to God, mystically espoused to Christ and dedicated to the service of the Church, when the diocesan bishop consecrates [her] according to the approved liturgical rite."

The consecrated virgin understands the positive value of living for the Lord in the midst of the world. She does not wear a habit or veil, nor does she use the title "Sister." While she may associate with other consecrated virgins for friendship and mutual encouragement, she lives her vocation individually. She provides completely for her own material needs, including medical care and retirement resources, through employment, pension, or other means. At no time is her diocese financially responsible for her. Not restricted to a particular apostolate, she is free to choose her own way of serving the church according to her natural and spiritual gifts. Consecrated virgins usually offer their free time, as they are able, to their parish, diocese, or Church-sponsored association. Some volunteer their time also in civic responsibilities.

Not quite sure I understand her need to lay prostrate on the floor in her wedding dress...

It is an act of submission and humility to the will of God.

Edit: It is also done during the ordination of deacons, priests, and bishops, as well as religious brothers and sisters.

I'm not going to let you steal the humor of this from me.

This is looney tunes no matter how you spin it.

Well, laugh if you must, however it's completely serious.

Honestly, I hadn't heard of this before. My first thought upon reading this was, "Why doesn't she just become a Dominican sister?" But she answered that question right out of the gates in this article.

As I mentioned earlier, this concept is rather new to me. My guess, is that socially they would have been treated in much the same way as other single women. Within the Church, I don't know.

Another insensitive and offensive post by woody mocking a woman who dedicated her life to helping children and her Lord.

Her wedding was probably well attended because she was well liked within her community.

This seems very unusual. And being in the dailymail only makes it seem more so.

But: she seems very genuine and, while more religious than your average single woman that's NOT already a nun, she has an explanation for what she's doing that's not crazy.

I still struggle generally with the celibacy vow. But I can tend to understand it. If you make the vow you can probably get to a point of being more devoted to God.

I understand, conceptually at least, a vow of celibacy. But this seems really full on crazy to my non-Catholic eyes.

On a light note, did anyone ask Jesus if He wanted to get married? It looks like he didn't even show up for the wedding.

Is only one woman at a time allowed to be married to Jesus or are we sanctioning polygamy?

Clearly. Yet, when I read this I couldn't help but think of Jake Blues at Chez Paul. The individual that starred that post must have been Elwood.

Slop does have a tendency to be slippery. However I think pigs would have been better suited for this comment than dogs.

Has this marriage been consummated yet? I hope jesus doesn't wear his crown of thorns in bed - that would be dangerous
