Slim, you don't need to defend yourself to me, I could care less. I don't know you personally, but I have met you before, just so you know.

I don't care what a great person you think you are. I do think you should be concerned with the way your words and decisions make you look and more importantly the way you make ASB look (certainly not all the time, but some of the time).

When I was around, we just wore red Dixie Chicken hats, not cross axe handles. Had to be either a Dead or Sr. Red. Jrp's won't earn that privilege for a long time.

Dead's can have a tendency to over-value our own existence. Sorry for your bad experience.

wow. A friend of mine sent me this link. Funny stuff considering I was the one wearing the hat in question.

It appears this has become a thread on how the current leadership should conduct PR and the like. I can’t really comment on that but I can provide a different version of the story.

There was a reunion that night. Afterwards, several of us went to the chicken. Late that night, as we were drinking and playing 42, this random person walks up and says, "The real hats had bigger axe handles." Everyone then laughed. She then wanted to know who I was, when I went to school, where I was from, and how I got the hat. She was basically ignored and after a few moments she left.

Now, what happened after she left I have no idea.

However, I do know that if you are in the Chicken late at night and you have been drinking and you walk up unsolicited to a large group and announce yourself with some half-baked comment then you should expect to be dismissed expeditiously.

[]1 claiming that members of SB are denying their culpability in the aforementioned situation.

quote:
This is ridiculous, again, why are you trying to draw connections to member(s) of ASB verbally attacking a girl in a bar for asking a question…
[]1, again claiming that SB leaders (or member(s) of SB) attacked a girl in a bar.

quote:
Funny stuff considering I was the one wearing the hat in question

Kukta (not a current or former member of SB)

quote:
As I have gotten more of the story, I assume I am the one she is talking about. I do have braces, but not blonde hair and I am over 30. I actually have dark hair and I am 32. I don't remember anyone else with braces in the group.

3B Paul 97 (also not a current or former leader of SB)

quote:
From the information I received, it was all old Redpots (i.e. Pre 99), the initial "reaction" was an attempt at humor that missed it's mark and the person that pulled you aside was a Red from 1988.

Scott Coker '92, current member of SB, spelling out the situation well before those involved in the confrontation came forward as Reds, responsible for the things said.

quote:
There was a reunion that night. Afterwards, several of us went to the chicken.
kukta, implying that it was a reunion of on-campus Bonfire leadership (because kukta is (and was) not a leader in SB); thus verifying what Coker said: It was all old Reds.

I can't (and won't) speak for SB, but this sure looks like a case where an apology to SB is warranted.

They were wearing bonfire hats.... anyone who does or has worn anything associated with bonfire should find the nearest female to you and appoligize. By you wearing anything associated with bonfire wether at A&M or else where makes you at fault for the event that occured on the night in question. I sincerly hope that all of y'all take this and apoligize immediately.

Also, if you know anyone who has ever worn a red cap, do me a favor and call them and A..hole. What happened should not be tolerated. Regaurdless of which side of the story was true. The person that reports the situation first should always be taken with the highest respect and should not be questioned.

Ah, but we still have a Richard Jewell / Janet Reno situation going on here between the SB supporters and []1. (For those unfamiliar with the case of mistaken guilt, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Jewell )

With this quote
quote:
I know for a fact nobody is told to "defend the integrity of bonfire by becoming aggressive or yelling at the ignorant," but unfortunately, that's what happens.
[]1 inferrs that this interaction is another example of the "piss poor reputation" and culture that SB promotes. Unfortuneately, SB was not involved in said interaction and nobody in SB did anything to sully it's reputation.

quote:
But still...you've still got to know that it only takes one person to really mess it up for everybody.

Terry, your false accusations, misplaced snide comments, and use of this situation to piggyback your agenda really messes it up for those who share your sentiments. If I was on your side in this campaign against SB, I would apologize on your behalf.

I'm curious as to what my agenda is. Could you help me out with that one?

Did the original poster believe this to be an act on the part of SB, yes or no? Whether a case of mistaken identity is to blame or not, does she or does she not think it's to blame?

You guys really think I'm out to sink you or single handedly disolve your organization, and that's absurd.

I have no idea, but it seems like you take every opportunity to speak poorly of SB. Unfortuneately, it backfired on you this time.

quote:
Did the original poster believe this to be an act on the part of SB, yes or no?

Yes, but I still fail to see how SB is responsible for someones mistaken identity.

quote:
Whether a case of mistaken identity is to blame or not, does she or does she not think it's to blame?

Well, that's sure been cleared up for her. It was the old pre-SB Reds. They got on here and said so. Thanks to those who brought this issue up and thanks to those who set the story straight.

As for you []1:
You made false accusations by fact-lessly claiming that "ASB verbally attack(ed) a girl in a bar for asking a question…". You lambasted SB for denying responsibility for an altercation that DIDN'T INVOLVE SB. You made a false claim that members of SB "bec(ame) aggressive or yell(ed) at the ignorant."

You owe Student Bonfire an apology.

And then they were kind of making fun of me and instead of the guy just saying "oh, I'm Joe (whatever name) class of 'XX (whatever year)" which would have made me realize my error, they became what I felt like was aggressive and rude.

1. So you were "tipsy" (drunk)

2. How do we know that what you said to them was not rude??

3. Why should they be the ones to "whip-out"..? You went up to them...did you introduce yourself in this manner??

Just curious...

I took TR's comment as a joke, but I would suggest that people use a spell-checker. This is, after all, a public face for Bonfire . . . whether we want it to be so or not. If you use Mozilla one is built right in to the program.

My hubby was a redpot back in the 70's. Back then, there was a lot less "Hollywood." They laid low and worked hard, often going days without baths, and failing most of their classes. Maybe they had their problems, but the pots were a family, no mater what their class years. Guess the modern need for notarity has changed some folks' perspective. Back then if the newspaper or Bryan TV station asked for an interview, no one volunteered because no one wanted to take the ridicule it would cost them. The mindset was BONFIRE, not fame.
HOGS LEW
How long do you want to ignore this user?
From my experience with Pots they tend to stay out of the lime light. They still work their asses off.

There is a difference now that Bonfire is more complicated. They are also the de facto spokesmen. They have to be in the limelight. They have to manage the PR, which is just as important to Bonfire as anything. There are some bad stories yeah, but the vast majority of what they do is honest, good work.
SquareOne07
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Maybe they should look into getting some more PR oriented people to handle their PR issues?

This would help to do away with bad stories and soften the blows of the inevitable ones.

I seem to recall a Red 2 years ago saying in the Batt that he really didn't give a damn what the judge had to say, they were gonna burn whether there was a ban or not.

Square,

Before you continue to bash the organization that you loathe, can I request a simple "I'm sorry I jumped the gun and blamed current leadership for a mistaken identity."

Then feel free to bash away.

-Paul
SquareOne07

Bash and loathe aren't really the words I would use at all.

And sure, it may have been a case of mistaken identity after all, I'm still not sure about that, but I see where you're going. But from all the information that I read, I had (and still have) no reason to believe otherwise. If in the end I was led to believe that it was members (I don't care if it was leadership or not) who harassed this girl, then I'm sorry that I was mistaken. But if it turns out to be true that any current or former member or ASB took any part in this, then no, I'm not sorry and again, not surprised.

The previous comment about loyalty and "fame" seems to fit in here. When it's convenient for you guys to be building "the same fire", you use that. When "the same fire" brings up thoughts of dangerous and disturbing habits of old, you all seem to throw it (and them) under the bus. And now it seems as if I'm reading a "well, it wasn't us, it was the OTHER guys".

But bash and loathe aren't quite the right words...Paul, you even said before that you thought I had good wishes for the fire, didn't you?

It sounds like everyone is using this post as a way to take out their issues with SB, that is not what I was seeking.

I was tipsy, I was a bit frustrated because I felt as though the group was making fun of me and this older gentleman spoke to me. Now as far as thing went, I believe I had to ask several times for the person to get out of my face.

And 3B Paul 97 you look really young if you are 32.

I think the whole situation kind of stunk and you should not get the full blame because like I said the group kind of baited me.

You all have much better things to do than to keep debating this though. I just think that the whole situation showed a superiority attitude by the group that could turn a lot of people off. Isn't the point of SB to get people involved or to get support to continue it in a productive way?

Like I said in the original post, the group had no idea who I was or what I was wanting to talk to them about. There is a polite way to handle it too and not mock people.

I really think that the goal of this has been achieved because maybe part of the behaviors were checked. I wish you guys the best of luck this year. Lets put this to rest.

Let's just all be good aggies to each other.
shanag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
mc, thanks for peaceably ending this thread... unfortunately your valid concern was manipulated by some and turned into a means to bash SB. I hope this doesn't cause people to not come out to SB this fall. Like you said, let's be good aggies to each other and let it go.
