Everything seemed great on Saturday. This year seems better and smoother than any previous. I plan an writing a detailed account of my visit to stack on Saturday. It was great and I was very impressed.

Looks good! I don't much care for the exposed super set and I think there should be some "filler logs" around centerpole under the outhouse, but otherwise looking good. I see they decided to go with 5 tiers this year?

Are they going to make it a tradition to have 5 tiers in even years and 4 tiers in odd years?

Lew-
When were you there? You sneaky Jew.

bgrimm05-
I agree on the superset. Disagree on filler logs. SB has preached that every log touches the ground for safety, they can't go away from that. Ever.

What? Lew was out on Saturday? How could I have missed you? Damn, I have a Lew story and everything.

Okay, filler "toothpicks" about 3"-4" in diameter. FYI, the outhouse does not touch the ground. Neither do the cross braces. Together, they weight much more than toothpicks I'm talking about. What I'm saying is that they would be wired directly to center pole to dress it up and make it the same color/texture as the rest of stack.

The outhouse is not a log.

The cross brace isn't a log either (it isn't even made of wood) and it is bolted quite securly to centerpole and all 4 windles.

I think bgrimm05 is referring to the crossties that the outhouse rests on.

no, I was pointing out that there is additional weight on the stack that does not touch the ground nor does it support itself. These toothpicks would be no different. I would assume that the "all logs touching the ground thing" is so that each log is not supporting a lot of additional weight other than itself (1st stack essientially had 5 others stacked on top of it before).

bgrimm05:

It is a precident issue, We as an orginization do not want to start placing any logs/sticks/twigs/toothpics on top of another log. Once this happens, the construction could change little by little back into the inherently unstable design that was used in the '90's

We discussed that each year (2003, 2004, 2005) and decided that that it wasn't a good "perception" idea each time. Seems they have continued with that.

I agree that you guys should not start the precedent of any log-type-thing not touching the ground. That being said, why not chop enough off the top of centerpole and have the outhouse look like it is resting on the top of stack?

*edit - starting next year, I mean. I don't mean to suggest that anyone go hacking at it now.

I'm guessing it is so that the outhouse doesn't burn so quick.

Again I will say, "NO LOGS WOULD BE ON TOP OF OTHER LOGS!" They would be fastened to centerpole (or even the bottom of the outhouse) just to cover up centerpole since it looks different now that it is a telephone pole instead of full tree trunk. And Kip's idea would be good too. Again, not a big deal though.

I am pretty sure that centerpole is getting trimmed.

Coker if you have a Lew story I am really glad I didn't see you. Otherwise I probably would have never been able to show my face again. One highlight of the evening was meeting a new Hog who said "are you the Jew Pot?"

I think it really comes down to perception rather than reality. If people perceive that an exception has been made for some small twigs, sticks or logs, then what other exceptions might have been made? At this point, and really at no point in the future, either, should any exceptions to the rules ever be made. Safety, safety, safety. This one exception may not seem to be a big deal, but to the community of people who are looking for any reason to condemn Bonfire, it could be huge.

And yes, I did notice after-the-fact that centerpole has been cut down. It guess that goes to what Will said, that they leave it higher so that it burns a little slower.

At the end of the day it comes down to aesthetics. It would look nicer to have some logs up there, but do you lose more than you gain?
