nope... didnt make it this year, one side didnt light right and the hole thing shifted after a couple hours and it snapped

Centerpole actually caught fire this year.

Centerpole did not make it because the red pots snapped it while putting their red pot log on stack Sunday. Luckily stack held and burned. Centerpole was already in 2 pieces though

this is incorrect, as Centerpole, still intact was used to put the Frat House up on Monday.

I understand that yes, I'm part of Walton who won centerpole this year. What I'm saying is that inside the structure, the splice had snapped. Thus when stack shifted and fell, centerpole went with it because of the break. It wasn't a pretty onion bloom shift like last year, it was off centered and centerpole was not standing due to it.

There is no splice!

The pole is one piece.

wangus.... There is no splice. Centerpole could not have snapped due to the red log.

You should fact check a bit before posting.

No splices used...

Ah, memories. I was part of the crew who picked out, cut, and delivered centerpole for the Student Bonfire in '03

Do you realize the amount of force it would take for something like that to happen? People were saying the same thing in 1999. It's simply not possible from a physics standpoint.

Well, centerpole never actually touched the ground until after midnight...

Sorry guys, I'm not going to argue with you and I will say that centerpole didn't touch the ground till will after midnight since we were the last one's out there besides the browns or reds.

I got my information from a couple brown pots. Said the reds used a tractor and kept pushing the log until they heard a huge crack.

a crack like the transmission casing breaking?

Please wangus, stop posting about things you don't know, take a physics course, look up soil properties, and try driving a tractor one day.

even if they were pushing Red log, the tires on the tractor would simply spin in place and dig the tractor into the ground. the forces transfered to stack would have been disipated between 5 poles.

Believe it or not, I've seen a D6 dozer pushing stack down...the short version is...it doesn't.

and since you seem to be lost on this subject a D6 tractive force far exceeds the Massey or the Ford.

A brown said it!??! It MUST be true!

Those infernal machines in the windows have scrambled the poor kids brain.

just an addendum, 5 poles are buried. all the other logs wired together to create stack also create a resistive force to being pushed over.

so they really rammed a dozer into stack before huh? I've told some people (when explaining the SB stack design) that you could drive a bulldozer into it and it wouldn't go anywhere, I thought I was only slightly hyperbolizing but guess not…. was that '05 or prior?

New years day '05

After much of stack was picked apart already

Edit:

1/1/06

New years day after Bonfire '05

At Burn, a Nerd and I were discussing whether there might be a negative correlation between Bonfire standing past midnight and A&M winning the game, now that we have a sturdy stack design but haven't done well in football. And the opposite being true in the '80s and '90s. Does anyone have the statistics on that?

Hmm...the way I see it we are 2 out of 5 vs. t.u. whenever stack has lit and stayed lit.

02 - 05 Lost to t.u.
02 - burned well
03 - burned well
04 - very wet, very slow burn
05 - well let's not even bring that up

Beath the Hell outta t.u in 06 and 07, Ran out of time in '08
06 - burned hot as hell - Whoop
07 - see above
08 - see above
09 - watched my first Bonfire from highway 6 - but from what I've seen here, it was successful

If the stack can withstand the force of a 10 BQ ram crew with a running start, it can withstand anything.
