That thread on the football board is some awesome stuff and would do all Ags some good to read a little into our history about how Bonfire was.

However, go over to other boards http://www.texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=1015689&forum_id=7&page=last#r13555551 and they're saying some pretty seriously nasty stuff - talking about "fake" bonfire and such.

Are opinion like that an accurate representation about the way many view off-campus bonfire? Or do you all think that view is only one in a few?

nope.

Worth looking into in my opinion. Don't you feel it's important to gauge the kind of support that's out there and be in a situation to listen to what people are saying? Silly of me to ask since some "bonfire" people seem to think that complaints from "outsiders" are unimportant.

An interesting correlation between Aggie Football enthusiasts (arguably a very tradition rich section) and the general thread. It might be said that those strong in tradition support Bonfire, pre/post '99. Of course, I expect someone to say something about correlation and causation.

Regardless, an interesting observation.

that post was way to well thought out and intelligent to be on Texags. But also well said. I think its interesting that the people on the general board general are not the type of people who join causes or groups. If you look at some of the other discussions from the past alot of people from the GB are like that.

Who gives a crap about what anyone thinks about Bonfire. The great thing about this Bonfire is that someone wanted to build it. That very fact has always been good enough to draw plenty of people to complain about.

I love Aggie Sports but I didn't make any lifelong friends by standing next to anyone at sporting events.

Bottomline - All you red ass MF'ers out there lifting logs, don't waste your breath arguing - you know what you've done - and its as red ass as any fire to ever stand on Duncan or the Polo Fields. Head down, keep going - that way you are more streamlined for the sh*tstorm - only you guys decide what YOUR fire is or isn't.

Since Student Bonfire is now "privately financed" perception is huge. Today's Bonfire does not have the privilege of university and community support to finance this undertaking as in the "good ol days"

If we want to continue this tradition, we should all care quite a bit about what others outside our little group have to say about Bonfire.

So you establish principles and abide by them and let the chips fall where they may. Which as I have seen from a lot of pretty mature comments made about Bonfire from its participants - you are doing.

If you are looking for consensus - you will not now - nor did we - find it.

If Bonfire cured African Hunger - there would be people that stand against you, let them.

I don't know if your take away from my post is what I intended - I SUPPORT YOU GUYS and those that do, do and there is very little chance of you winning over your present detractors - just keep building the fire.

If there is something of worth in your "little group" it will not always be little.

Your support is greatly appreciated. I mean not to change the overall perception of Bonfire here, I only ask that we stay cognizant of how others perceive our organization. Those that build Bonfire now cannot assume there will be another fire to build next year as our finances and community support are not as stable as they during your time on campus.

You are right in that Bonfire workers should not listen to those that would have them spend their weekends away from the woods. However, as a group, we must know what our detractors are claiming if we wish to continue earning support from the community and various alumni.

Our group is growing and so is our support system, but we cannot jeopardize this growth by ignoring general opinions around us, or attempting to go outside the law to have our burn again.

AFAICT, it's mostly a generation gap.

Among Aggies from pre-SB days, it seems to be a common view.

Among recent graduates, it's one in a few.

And most current students don't know what all the fuss is about. "What's Bonfire?", they ask.

I do not think that word "troll" means what you think it means. He's not picking a fight or being incindeary, he's asking an honest question. Seems like you're the one doing the trolling. Lighten up.

In response to your question, I fully support off campus bonfire.

I am fully aware of the definition of a troll...

the basic jist follows posting to incite responses when you really don't care what the responses are...you are just trying to start an argument.

While 3 other boards were lit up with the subject of Student Bonfire being "real" or not...he felt it necessary to bring the "argument" to a board that contains a majority of supporters so of course the response to his question is going to be biased.

If the troll is successful, some posters that rarely ever venture off of this board would be inticed to begin arguing in an unfamiliar board, and, should their veiw be in the minority they would be ripped apart. Or, in the case of one board... if the "Bonfire Only" poster would venture over to the General Board, they would not understand that 99.44% of what is posted there is just because people are board and trying to get a response (trolls). They would then argue and stick to their guns for hours, days, or maybe even weeks while their stress level peaks, their blood pressure raises, and they begin to get their driving spirit broken by people that really didn't care in the first place...

yep, given the circumstances of this OP...troll.
