You've got guys like Jack Ingram who border on the edge of mainstream at times (I don't think he's sold out, I just think his style is one that is more prone to acceptance by the mainstream as opposed to someone like REK).

You are aware that the lead single from his new album is a cover of "Lips Of An Angel", aren't you?

I mean I have become of big fan of Jack's in the last few years but ever since he signed with the new label he's pissed me off. First he releases a live cd that is just a repackaging of "Live From Gruene Hall" with two extra studio tracks, which sucks because I'm not buying a cd I already own for two fricking songs. Then he delays his new studio album forever, and when it finally comes out he (1) rips off the #1 rock song in the country for his lead single and (2) includes the two studio tracks from the re-released live album.

I realize all these are smart business decisions and money making decisions, but they are annoying to the long time fan.

Honestly - I doubt he really intended this cd for those of us that have all of the others.

Pat Green's first cd with the big label had 3-4 re-runs on it as well.

Yeah, this CD was intended to showcase Jack Ingram's history to those who had just been introduced to him, not to sell another CD to the diehards.

I know what the intent was but that doesn't make it any less annoying. It's just as annoying as when an artist releases a greatest hits and then takes on a couple new studio tracks to entice people who own all the material already.

I've gotta put another vote out there for Mickey & the Motorcars, my favorite among the relatively unknowns. Some buddies and I went to a Cross Canadian Ragweed concert in Austin and Mickey & the Motorcars opened for them. We were standing around joking about the band's name and whether we came to see them or CCR. When they finally came out and played, I was impressed. I told one of my buddies that I thought they sounded kinda like Reckless Kelly, and he told me that the lead singers are brothers.

Anyway, Careless is a great album that I can't recommend highly enough. It's got that great blend of country and rock that makes Texas Country so good.

Three new(er) songs by up-and-coming artists that I absolutely LOVE:

Kyle Park: Half Empty Shotgun

Jackson Taylor Band: Why Does It Build You Up to Tear Me Down?

Johnny Cooper: Texas to You

I know a guy from Houston named Kyle Reed (or is it "Read"?) who is absolutely one of the best acoustic guitar players I've ever seen. He has a CD out and plays here and there doing the singer/songwriter thing. I can't remember much about his tunes, but he's definitely got chops. Have never even seen him play an electric guitar (not sure that he does) but this guy can shred. I think he's on myspace.

Adam Hood - he's from Alabama, but my friends and I all call him the Alabama Stoney (he sounds a lot like Stoney LaRue) - he is amazing, and makes a ton of runs through Texas...

Josh Grider is another one that I'm a huge fan of. His band went their own way at the end of the year, and he's now focusing on solo acoustic gigs and gigs with his wife Kristi (who is amazing as well!)

And I'll second votes for Bonnie Bishop and Micky and the Motorcars.

Another couple to throw into the mix are Ryan Turner and Ryan James...

All I've heard out of Bart Crow is "Wear My Ring", but that is an outstanding song.

I saw bart crow band at PK lake back in december, and they played for FOUR HOURS, before they played "wear my ring." It was kinda annoying. They just played a bunch of old honky tonk before they got to it, which was weird since "wear my ring" has a completely different sound to it.

I really love honky tonk, but when you've only got one hit out, i don't think that means that you can play for 4 hours and not expect people to get restless.

The Derailers have been around for years, although their sound is more of a Bakersfield-type. Still.....they're quite good and have flown under the radar for a while.

I would have to say Max Stalling '89, Mark David Manders, Owen Temple, Tommy Alverson, and Micheal Shane Borden (now with the Disel Kings)

Max Stalling is definitely a good one.

I like Mark David Manders' old stuff, but I bought Cannonball a while back and was pretty disappointed.

I like Owen Temple's old stuff too. Anybody know if he has any good new stuff out?

I was really into the Texas scene for a while, but I haven't been that impressed with some of the newer bands or some of the music that the old standbys have released.

If you're into this sort of music, I'd suggest checking out Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown, his band before he went solo. Incredible stuff. He's a songwriting genius. Really eclectic and probably out of his mind though.

If you like Ragweed, then check out the Drive-By Truckers. They're from Alabama. They've got 3 good songwriters and just have a way of putting things so bluntly that its amazing.

Finally, if you're into bluegrass, listen to Old Crow Medicine Show. They're swinging through Texas later this month.

I've never listened to the first two that you spoke of, though I've heard good things about them. OCMS, on the other hand, has recently become one of my favorite bands. Their work on "Down Home Girl", both the song and the video, is just pure musical greatness.
