I'm not the biggest Spielberg fan. I really loved JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, DUEL, RAIDERS OF THE LOSR ARK, and THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS. I liked A.I., EMPIRE OF THE SUN, THE COLOR PURPLE and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

He's made some god-awful stuff such as HOOK, ALWAYS, 1941. Some of his films are just there, such as THE TERMINAL and MINORITY REPORT.

Probably the most underrated Spielberg film is CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.

AI is one of his worsts, along with Minority Report and War of the Worlds.

I really like Jaws.

I'll say Minority Report is one of his best. A creative, suspenseful whodunnit.

His latest "Munich" was terrific in my opinion.

I am going to throw a little love on an unfairly forgotten little gem of his:

1941

I absolutely LOVE this film. It's hilarious. Spielberg showed a deft hand at "madcap" comedy and the cast is to-die-for (Belushi, Akroyd, John Candy, Slim Pickens, Christopher Lee, Toshiro Mifune(!), Robert Stack and a slew of cameos).

The movie bombed and, since then, I don't believe Spielberg has ever tried his hand at out-and-out comedy again...which is a shame.

Yeah, but him having the aliens play the same hide and seek in WtoW ruined minority report for me.

I was a big fan until he cut all of his funding to the Boy Scouts over the whole Gay issue...

Spielberg isn't making the same quality movies he used to make, Munich not withstanding. AI, Minority Report, and especially The War of the Worlds were all big disappointments for me.

My favorites Spielberg movies:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Saving Private Ryan
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Jaws
1941
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Lost World
Empire of the Sun
Hook
Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

I will agree with this. 1941 is one of the funniest movies ever. Any movie with John freaking Belushi piloting a P-40 Tomahawk and shooting down a Jap sub has just got to be great!

Nah, I liked it too. A little goofy but an entertaining take on Peter Pan.

Never seen "Empire of the Sun" - what's it about?

Empire of the Sun is about a young English boy who gets seperated from his parents as the Japanese army overruns Shanghai in the early stages of their war against China. The rest of the story recounts how he trys to survive on the streets then when captured his life in an internment camp.

It is an overly long film but does have some very good scenes and does tell a good story.

Thanks for the summary on EOTS. I just bought Duel and the Sugarland Express from Amazon.com

I had seen Duel before and really liked it, but have not seen The Sugarland Express. I will watch that one this weekend.

Spielberg is #3 on my favorite director list.

Empire of the Sun is based on author J.G. Ballard's childhood memoir. Great movie!

Ya'll have definitely convinced me to at least see Empire of the Sun.

Usually can't go wrong with a Spielberg film.

As a WWII and WWII aviation nut, Empire of the Sun features some great real footage of P-51 Mustangs strafing the internment camp and even a shot of a B-29 coming in low over the camp. Yeah, it was a bit long, the kid who would become Batman was annoying, but it was a fine WWII movie.

I really liked Hook... and really hated AI. Spielberg is a great director, but sometimes I think that he thinks just because of his name he can make any movie and it will be good

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The best part of Empire of the Sun was the kid getting to know the two unofficial American "leaders" of the camp. One of them was John Malcovich. They sort of help him become more street wise.
jkag89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No the best part of Empire of the Sun is the P-51 Mustang strafing run. Fantastic piece of film.

P-51 Mustang Cadillac of the Sky!!!!!!

John Malcovich character is quite interesting.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
While the P-51 Mustang was the best part, it didn't make up for the fact that the rest of the movie was long, drawn out, and extreemly boring.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

Does anyone else think the saddest moment in any Spielberg film is when the kid looks out the window of the car as the family leaves Roy Neary in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS? And then the dad leaves with the aliens at the end of the film?

Yes it did. I didn't find the movie boring just too long.

big 12, i thought that part was sad, but one of the few movies i've really been close to tears on is Schindler's List, at that part at the end

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The problem with Spielberg is that he tries to sentimentalize his movies too much.

Schlindler's List was a great movie on its own without him making stuff up at the end. The scene at the end where OS is driving away in the car crying amongst the former prisoners was made up for sappy reasons.

"I will trade all of my riches to save just one more life." Just didn't happen ... so why make it up?
