Chicago is easy listening, and EWF is R&B. Neither is "hard rock". However, I prefer EWF by a long shot to Chicago.

Gotta throw Blood Sweat and Tears in the mix.

But Chicago's early stuff, there first 3 or 4 albums, was pretty great.

I really like Blood Sweat & Tears too. I saw them in the early 90's at the Del Lago conference center on Lake Conroe.

Doobie Brothers > Chicago.
EWF is really a different genre alltogether, as Buck pointed out.

My jazz band (I play trombone) did "Caravan" by Duke Ellington as recorded by Chicago at our last concert. Tons of fun to play and greatly appreciated by the audience.

I got to see Chicago live @ Soldier Field the summer of 1970. Great then and great now.
