Do you go to the movies less now?

Glad to see articles on box office slumps for movies. Why do YOU (if you do) go to less movies now?

Me: 1. People talking. To each other and on their phones.

2. I counted 9 commercials and 8 previews at Land of the Dead (I was weak,I HAD to see it, and was disappointed) the other night. And those started at the time the movie was supposed to start. The worst of course is: "I want your Bod!"

3. Remakes, ripoffs, and just overall crappy quality. Is this not THE worst summer movie season EVER?! Anyone seen previews for The Island? It's a ripoff of a '70s piece of garbage called The Clonus Horror (Mystery Science Theater fans might be familiar with it).

keep it up America, maybe eventually Hollywood will wake up.

No. 2 for me. The last movie I saw in the theatres, ROTS, seemed like it had 20 minutes worth of previews AND commercials. The commercials are what ticks me off.

No 2 for me. The commercials are over the top. I enjoy previews, but not commercials and anti-pirating tirades.

I don't mind the commericicals, as long as it's before the time the movie starts. In fact, I'd quite enjoy it if they playled them all the time up to the time the movie starts.

I acutally go to the movies as much as ever, which is about 2-3 times a year.

Less. Home enertainment will force the business to change, which is good IMO.

I rarely go to more than one or two movies a year. With netflix, high def cable and a big screen TV, who needs it? At home I don't have to worry about distractions from other people in the audience, and frankly the movies get worse every year.

i don't mind the commercials. but i do hate the increasingly rude people in the theater. everyone seems to think they have a right to talk during the movie. i don't pay to hear others talk, nor do i pay to have them kick the back of my seat.
people! they're the worst.

Definitely 1 and 3. First, if I ever feel like going to the movies, I can't find ONE movie that I want to see. Isn't that sad? This summer has been horrible.

If I do find a movie, for example, we went to see Batman, it seems like everybody was talking throughout the movie. They were talking to each other, or worse, to the screen. When he went to kiss Katie Holmes, the whole theater broke out with "kissy" noises. (and these were the adults!) I hate people.

"Hey, Superhero movie X was successful, so let's make movies for every other comic book character that has ever existed." Right now you've got War of the Worlds(remake), Batman Begins(another superhero), Fantastic Four(superhero), Bewitched(remake/ripoff), Herbie(remake), Charlie and Chocolate Factory(remake), Longest Yard(remake), Land of the Dead(same old idea), Rebound(same old idea), etc.

How about Sh*tty movies? Is that an option? And the ones that aren't sh*tty get bad numbers? All these remakes and unoriginal movies are killing Hollywood.

I want to go see War of the Worlds this weekend somewhere in Houston, with a good sound system and big screen, but I'm actually questioning it because I will sit though 10 commercials, sit next to people talking on their cell phones, sit in front of stoned loud teenagers, and the picture quality will be horrible. It amazes me that theaters do nothing to combat ANY OF THIS. Until they do something, people will stay away, and until Hollywood regains originality, there won't be a reason to go to the movies anyway.

Find a good stadium theatre. War is worth it.

I have gotten to where I go see a movie probably twice a month. A lot more than I used to.

I don't go because the movies usually suck. I'm sick of all the remakes, or rehashed ideas. Is it too much ask for these "creative" artists to have an original idea? And when they have an original idea, it would be nice if it was executed well.

I'm glad I don't watch Indian movies, all of those are the same general concept.

I go 3-4 times a month at least, but that is relative since I probably watch 8-10 movies per week.

I go to the theater less because of the cost - Why pay $15 for me and my wife to see a movie when I can wait 4-6 months and own it for $5 or $6.

Of the things you listed, the commercials are the second biggest factor that keeps me away.

There are always new movies I want to see, but half of them are not showing at the CS Cinemark because they are always showing crap like Herbie Goes Bananas on multiple screens.

The movies are just too expensive. I only go to the movies at the very first showing where it'll only cost me $4 or $5. That's unless it's a movie that I'm just dying to see. I'll gladly pay the money to see the Narnia movie when it comes out.

Also, people can't get into their heads how to turn off their cell phone. It amazes me.

We make more than at any time since we've been together and go to the movies less than at any time we've been together.

Saw War of the Worlds last night in a huge theater. Had a good time - not too many kids in that one and no cell phone incidents.

Primarily because the quality is poor. That and the mall throng that you have to sit next to.

Mostly #3 for me. Too many remakes. And you know it's a sign of Hollywood self-awareness when a new word -- "re-imagining" -- is invented by Hollywood apologists to avoid the negative baggage of calling something a "remake". I heard a funny interview with Bruce Campbell on Mike & Evo's Dragon Page Wingin' It podcast regarding this subject. Bruce astutely pointed out that all the blockbuster movies that Hollywood churns out these days would all be nothing more than B-movies in the '50s and '60s. Is it not ironic that the genre that Hollywood disparaged in its Golden Era is now the genre that keeps it afloat?

Less... all of the above, plus it is too damn expensive. We usually watch movies at home. If we do go, its usually on a weekday morning or early afternoon.

I get in for just five bucks at my small town multiplex.

So I go when there is a movie there I expect to be worth seeing.

It's not crowded except at certain times for some movies and those showings are easy to predict and avoid.

I just move away from rude, noisy people.

I take a Snickers and bottled water.

In addition, I watch as many as 15-20 movies on TV or from Netflix and Blockbuster every month.

I find plenty of good movies out there between selected new releases, foreign releases, rewatching a few old favorites and discovering interesting ones you had never heard of before.

Paying more money for a bad movie in a crowded noisy theater would be a deal breaker for me also.

Here are some I've seen at home and in the theater recently that I'll recommend.

Different strokes, ktamunt, I suppose.

I found "Frailty" truly chilling, comparing very well in my mind with Hitchcock's "Psycho."

That is, as you said, a very varied list.

Anybody else seen any of them?

This is from EW.com's daily blog. Looks like the remakes and sequels are gonna keep on coming. Personally, besides Superman Returns, I look forward to NONE of these flicks. Most of them are absolutely ridiculous.

quote:
How dependent on sequels and remakes is Hollywood? These are the ones that are in today's news alone:

-While promoting The Island, Djimon Hounsou (left) is talking to reporters about possible Gladiator and Constantine sequels.

-His Island costar, Michael Clarke Duncan, is up for a reprise of his Sin City role in another installment of the Frank Miller/Robert Rodriguez series.

-The Hollywood Reporter says Sony plans a second Hollow Man, another Road House, and a third I Know What You Did Last Summer.

-Speaking of summer, Paramount is remaking Mark Harmon's 1987 comedy Summer School.

-Tyler Perry is currently directing a sequel to Diary of a Mad Black Woman, called Madea's Family Reunion.

-Andrew Lloyd Webber is turning his movie-to-stage musical Sunset Boulevard back into a movie, with Glenn Close reprising her Tony-winning Broadway role as Norma Desmond.

-The screenwriters behind Mission: Impossible 3 are also doing the Transformers movie.

-Finally, Sydney's Daily Telegraph prints the rumor that, as soon as the smooth-scalped Kevin Spacey finishes playing Lex Luthor in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, he'll grow back his hair to reteam with Singer for a Usual Suspects sequel. I don't know whose behind this sudden outbreak of sequelitis, but I suspect it's Keyser Soze.

Not nearly as much as I used to.

Now I typically go see only what I really want to see and wait for the rest to come to DVD. This year I really only cared to see Revenge of the Sith, War of the Worlds and Batman Begins. I've seen the 1st two of those but will see Batman when there's time.

There's been a twist in theater-going this year, however, as my wife bought a monthly pass book to the Alamo Draft House theater in West Houston. We've actually been going to the movies there once a month this year (once the movie in question has gone off the "no-passes" thing). We've been using this to see movies that we normally would not have seen, like Robots or The Interpreter.

I go less now for a few reasons:

  • I used to have the option of catching a Friday morning movie twice a month or so, not any more
  • The movies out aren't as good (I don't think it's just the remake issue either). A few years ago, I remember having 4-5 movies out that I wanted to see at a time. Now I'm lucky if it is 1. This could be a chicken/egg thing however because I've also found myself opting for other entertainment (do I enjoy the other activities more or is it just that the movies suck?).
  • Cost. I don't like paying $5.50-$6.00 for a movie during the day. They crossed the line at over $5.00. While not a huge difference, it's just a line that I didn't want to cross.

For those complaining about the remakes or movies with the same ideas, please give us the last movie you watched/enjoyed with an original idea.

All three reasons, plus I have Netflix. The last film I went to see at the Cineplex was RoTS because it was a movie that had to be seen in a theater.

Unless it is something like The Matrix, Gladiator, LoTR, or Braveheart; I would just rather wait until it comes out on DVD. With DVDs, I get bonus features, I can watch it on my own timeline, I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for food/drinks, and if I don't like the movie I can just put it in an envelope and get a new one in a few days.

As I have said before, once I see Million Dollar Baby, I am canceling my Netflix subscription and living off my DVD collection for a few months. I predict nothing but crap is coming to the big screen for a long time.
