I wouldn't call it the best ever, but the best chord in a sports anthem has to be in We Will Rock You after the intro.

Townsend's repeated triple strumming A in "Won't Get Fooled Again," comes to mind.

I believe Jim01 refers to that long, sustained chord at the very end of The Beatles' "A Day In The Life," right after the big orchestral buildup, where it sounds like they dropped the studio's grand piano to the floor.

And I agree.

Gig 'em, FAST FRED '65.

At the end of the 33 1/2 minute "Mountain Jam" by the Allman Brothers, Duane Allman hits the final chord and it just sounds like a monster! It gets much louder in the mix, leading me to believe that he walked over to the amp and cranked the volume. Rock n' roll!

Fred, that is the chord I was thinking about. I drew a blank this morning. Thanks for the confirmation.

I'm a fan of Ebm myself, though obviously that doesn't sit well with guitarists.

All opening chords...

E as in "Tom Sawyer" ala Rush.
E as in "Back in Black" ala AC/DC.
E as in "Iron Man" ala Black Sabbath(not really a chord though, but you get the drift).

G. A big, fat G. It not only sounds great, but when played on a fat-necked guitar, it looks like you are giving the crowd the bird.

I don't know about it being my favorite, but the distortion breaking in on Radiohead's "Creep" deserves a mention.

Young's is almost a single note (not chord) solo, but he descends two additional notes at the end.
