Ok Ags,

I want to get the wife a bass clarinet for Christmas. From what I've seen, I'll be dropping some cash, so might as well start planning now.

What are the good brands? She played in high school and wants to get back into it.

I mostly stuck to B flat and E flat clarinets, but Buffet and Leblanc are some of the best brands, which means they are the most expensive.

Buffet makes the best regular Bb clarinets. i used to play regular clarinet and then upgraded to bass clarinet in high school. How much dough are you willing to part? In respect I think Selmer makes an awesome bass clarinet (as well as some nice saxes, the Mark series). I used school owned instruments; a crappy Leblanc for marching and a normal Selmer bass clarinet for concert. When i was a junior this freshman (total daddys girl) had her own bass clarinet ($4-5K) this was a top of the line Selmer, and it had a few extra keys than normal but was still a Bb bass clarinet and not a contrabass clarinet(our school had a very old one, it was so cool). I would say go with Selmer whether you get a normal one or a suped up one.

It's a niche market, to be sure.

But if someone gave me one for Christmas, I'd be thrilled.

I played one in junior high and loved it. Of course, it didn't hurt that I sat next to a cheerleader.
