I'm fiending for some kick-ass live music in Houston...these cheesey Sherlock's type bands aren't doing anything for me... suggestions on venues or bands to look out for?
Depends on your definition of "kick ass." You listed KNAC on another site so are you looking for more hard rock/metal or what? I'm familiar with most of the live venues in Houston, so I'll do my best to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately Houston kinda sucks for live music, but there's some good bands from time to time.
I also would like to ask for guidance on some live music of my preference. I'd like to listen to some rock/blues music. Not so much heavy metal. Although I am down for some rock/rap ala Rage Against the Machine, Cypress Hill, etc.

If you like newer metal (the dry-heave type), the Engine Room downtown is good. They get a band I like about twice a year.
If you like old school metal (where the singer actually sings), Forgettaboutit in northwest Houston or the 19th Hole in the Woodlands are good.
Cardi's is a toilet.
Certain places inside the loop like the Meridian or Rudyards get a mix of different kinds of bands.
Numbers in Montrose gets alot of crappy out of town bands that lean toward the alternative end of the spectrum, although they did get Lacuna Coil and the Genitorturers.
I'm sure Echoes can add a dozen or two names to this list.
Echoes, I'm into mostly rock and metal, but also listen to a lot of acoustic and other stuff... I just can't stand the canned stuff you get on the radio...
Particle is a great "jam band" (although I dislike that term) that's playing at meridian tomorrow night. Rhythm Room on Washington has some good shows, too. Last night someone told me a good band was playing tonight.
Guy Forsyth, I'll third or fourth him as well, if you like blues/rock. I'm kind of like tool, in that it's not my favorite stuff but I saw him several years ago at the Satelite Lounge(now defunct I believe) and he jammed.
He even played a Hand Saw the night I saw him. Definitely a good live show to see.
I've seen a bunch of shows at Continental Club, but two of the best were The NOrth Mississippi All Stars and Robert Randolph. Neither hardly play venues that small anymore.
continental club will be especially cool tomorrow nite.......if you like a little jim beam and corn whiskey with your bluegrass, do not miss these guys.......
