I don't believe that Eric Clapton himself has any false ideas about where he should be rated.
He's been saddled with that "Clapton is God" evaluation and great expectations since the sixties and he's still successfully performing.
I look at him as an interpreter, more than as an innovator.
To put a fine point on it, I'd call him an "innovative interpreter" with a good ear, fine chops, a decent voice and a really good sense of where blues rock comes from.
He does what he does pretty damn well and has for 40 years.
I'd put Eric Clapton musically on a level with Phil Collins and Stevie Winwood.
It would be a great treat to play bass guitar with any or all three of them.

It's not their fault that they're superstars.
IMHO, blasting those who worship or overrate Clapton makes more sense than blasting Eric, himself.
Because he can tastefully play his ass off with feeling and integrity.

Gig 'em, FAST FRED '65.
Before the world wide web, village idiots usually stayed in their own village.
